  1. 1. The impact of helminth infection in patients with active tuberculosis

    Author : Ebba Abate; Thomas Schön; Olle Stendahl; Abraham Aseffa; Zvi Bentwich; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The geographic distribution of helminth infection and tuberculosis (TB) overlap substantially. Experimental animal models and limited data from humans have shown that intestinal helminths could subvert the host immune response towards a T-helper 2 (Th2)-type immune response and an increased regulatory T-cell activity (Tregs). 2. 2. Helminths and immunity against tuberculosis

    Author : Daniel Elias; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : tuberculosis; BCG; helminths; immunomodulation; vaccination;

    Abstract : The efficacy of Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) is low and incidence of tuberculosis (TB) is high in those areas where helminths are endemic. Protection against tuberculosis requires strong cell mediated immunity while chronic helminth infections induce responses characterized by dominant Th2 responses as well as up-regulated regulatory T cell activity. 3. 3. Host-Parasite Interactions in Natural Populations

    Author : Peter Halvarsson; Jacob Höglund; Carles Vilà; Stuart Piertney; Zooekologi Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arvicola terrestris; avian malaria; balancing selection; Major histocompatibility complex; parasitetranscriptome; Populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : Parasitism is one of the most common ways of living and it has arised in many taxa. Parasites feed and live inside or on their hosts resulting in both long and short term consequences for the host. This thesis is exploring the phenotypic and genotypic effects of animals living with parasitic infections. READ MORE

  4. 4. Understanding allergies : how infections affect the function of T helper cells

    Author : Junjie Ma; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Allergic disorders are caused by a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. The hygiene hypothesis postulates that early-life microbial exposures impede the development of subsequent allergic diseases. However, unambiguous evidence that microbes reduce the development of allergic disorders is still lacking. READ MORE

  5. 5. New insights on type 2 immunity key drivers : mast cells and group 2 innate lymphoid cells

    Author : Avinash Ravindran; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Type 2 immune responses are characterized by the production of cytokines IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13. They are known to have crucial physiological and pathophysiological functions in the body. Data from recent studies indicate their importance in the containment and clearance of helminth infections.
