  2. 2. Point of care microfluidic tool development for resource limited settings

    Author : Indradumna Banerjee; Aman Russom; Luca Brandt; Gustaf Mårtensson; Jens Ducrée; KTH; []
    Keywords : Blood; control; cell separation; centrifugal microfluidics; diagnostics; elasto-inertial; hematocrit level; microfluidics; neonatal diagnostics; nucleic acid quantification; point of care; particle focusing; resource limited settings.; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : The development of point of care diagnostics using recent advances in microfluidics have the potential to transform health care in several ways, especially in resource limited settings with limited access to advanced health care infrastructure. However, translating a point of care device to reality is often a challenging task because of the complexities involved in integrating a number of diverse engineering concepts into an easy to use, accurate and portable device. 3. 3. Extreme hemodilution: Effects of inhalation anesthetics, hypoxia, and blood loss. An Experimental study in pigs

    Author : Henning Schou; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anaesthesiology; oxygen saturation.; blood volume; coronary circulation; blood lactate; oxygen uptake; Anemia; oxygen delivery; intensive care; Anestesiologi; intensivvård;

    Abstract : Hemodilution reduces the need for blood transfusion and hereby the risk for transmission of infectious agents. The present study investigated effects on systemic and myocardial circulation and oxygenation, and blood lactate concentrations; induced by nitrous oxide, isoflurane, hypoxia, and uncompensated blood loss, in pigs hemodiluted to a hematocrit of 11%. 4. 4. Hemodynamics of artificial devices used in extracorporeal life support

    Author : Francesco Fiusco; Lisa Prahl Wittberg; Katharine Fraser; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; computational fluid dynamics; hemorheology; platelet activation; thrombogenicity; extracorporeal membrane oxygenation; hemodynamics; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving therapy usedfor support in critical heart and/or lung failure. Patient’s blood is pumped viaan artificial lung for oxygenation outside of the body. The circuit is composedof a blood pump, cannulae for drainage and reinfusion, a membrane lung,tubing and connectors. READ MORE

  5. 5. Peripheral blood biomarkers of cell-specific autoimmunity. Studies in children at increased risk for type 1 diabetes

    Author : Falastin Salami; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; biomarkers; children; CBC; autoimmunity; neutrophils; red blood cells; hemoglobin; HbA1c T-cells; prospective follow-up; GAD-alum;

    Abstract : Objective While the incidence of children suffering from autoimmune type 1 diabetes (T1D) is increasing in Sweden and worldwide, the underlying etiology and cellular mechanisms behind this remain unknown. The predisposition of the high-risk HLA DR-DQ genotype and as yet unknown environmental triggers lead to autoimmunity and the onset of T1D, which is preceded by islet beta-cell autoantibodies acting as markers for ongoing autoimmunity.
