  1. 1. Heme A synthase from Bacillus subtilis and Aeropyrum pernix

    Author : Anna Lewin; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; heme A synthesis; heme A; heme A synthase; CtaA; cCtaA; cytochrome a; Aeropyrum pernix; Bacillus subtilis;

    Abstract : Respiration in animals, plants and many bacteria is dependent on heme A, which functions as a prosthetic group in a-type cytochromes (terminal energy-transducing oxidases in the electron transport chain that reduce molecular oxygen to water). Heme A synthase catalyses a chemically very demanding reaction, the conversion of one specific methyl side-group of heme O to a formyl group of heme A. READ MORE

  2. 2. Biomimetic Transition Metal Catalysts : Insights from Theoretical Modeling

    Author : Adam Johannes Johansson; Per E. M. Siegbahn; Margareta R. A. Blomberg; Per-Ola Norrby; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Catalysis; biomimetic; copper; non-heme iron; heme iron; O2 cleavage; H-atom transfer; radical chemistry; redox chemistry; thermo chemistry; entropy calculations; quantum chemistry; spin states; density functional theory DFT ; self-interaction error SIE .; Chemical physics; Kemisk fysik; kemisk fysik; Chemical Physics;

    Abstract : The scientific interest in the chemistry of synthetic transition metal complexes is motivated by at least two arguments:1.These can be regarded as models of biological transition metal complexes, e.g. metalloenzymes, whose functions can be difficult to reveal in detail due to their complexity. 3. 3. The Physiological Cost of Antibiotic Resistance

    Author : Mirjana Macvanin; Diarmaid Hughes; Stanley Maloy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; fusidic acid; fitness cost; protein synthesis; EF-G; ppGpp; RpoS; oxidative stress; heme; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; immunology; infectious diseases; Mikrobiologi; immunologi; infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : Becoming antibiotic resistant is often associated with fitness costs for the resistant bacteria. This is seen as a loss of competitiveness against the antibiotic-sensitive wild-type in an antibiotic-free environment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Synthesis of hemes found in heme-copper oxidases of Bacillus subtilis

    Author : Mimmi Throne-Holst; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microbiology; Biologi; Biology; heme biosynthesis; respiratory oxidase; cytochrome; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : The last step of aerobic respiration, the reduction of dioxygen to water, is catalysed by terminal oxidases. These oxidases can be divided into two unrelated families, the heme-copper oxidases and the cytochrome bd-type oxidases. These enzymes contain two or more heme molecules as prosthetic groups. 5. 5. Choreography of a proton pump : Studies of charge-transfer reactions in cytochrome c oxidase

    Author : Jóhanna Vilhjálmsdóttir; Peter Brzezinski; Joachim Heberle; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; heme-copper oxidase; cytochrome c oxidase; respiration; proton pump; electron transfer; proton transfer; proton-transfer pathway; midpoint potential; proton-pumping mechanism; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : In the last step of cellular respiration, electrons from metabolites are transferred to molecular oxygen, mediated by the enzyme complexes of the respiratory chain. Some of these enzyme complexes couple these redox reactions to formation of an electrochemical proton gradient across the cell membrane. The proton gradient is used e.g. READ MORE
