6. Regulation of Insulin Secretion in Relation to Nitric Oxide, Carbon Monoxide and Acid alpha-Glucoside Hydrolase Activities
Abstract : The main stimulus for insulin secretion is elevated blood glucose levels. In this thesis the aim was to study less well-known systems involved in the complex regulation of glucose-stimulated insulin release, emphasizing the role of the lysosomal/vacuolar system and the associated glycogenolytic acid alpha-glucoside hydrolases, but also the HO-CO and NOS-NO systems. 7. Nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO): A novel class of messenger molecules regulating insulin and glucagon secretion
Abstract : During the last decade it has been shown that nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) are produced in our own body, and that they constitute a novel class of messenger molecules. In 1992 a constitutive NO-producing NO-synthase (cNOS) was found in the islets of Langerhans, and in 1997 we could show for the first time that the islets also contained a CO-producing constitutive heme oxygenase (HO-2). 8. Recovery from focal brain ischemia induced by extradural compression in diabetic and non-diabetic rats
Abstract : Cerebrovascular disease and head trauma are among the leading causes of death and disability. In addition to severe motor disturbances, ischemia resulting from stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause mild to severe cognitive deficits. READ MORE

9. Renal cell death in urinary tract infections : role of E. coli toxins
Abstract : Febrile urinary tract infections (UTI) are common bacterial illnesses in children. Several follow up studies have shown that 10-15 % of infants with pyelonephritis will develop permanent renal damage, i.e., renal scars, which in turn may lead to chronic diseases such as hypertension and renal insufficiency. 10. Tumor instructed normal tissue : studies of potential extratumoral biomarkers and therapeutic targets in prostate cancer
Abstract : Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in Sweden and but luckily the majority of the patients will carry on their life without any consequences from the disease. Unfortunately, some will develop aggressive tumors and eventually die. READ MORE
