  1. 6. Extraction of polymeric rapeseed straw hemicelluloses for renewable films

    Author : Antonia Svärd; Ulrica Edlund; Elisabet Sjöholm; Emma Strömberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; rapeseed straw canola straw; hemicellulose; xylan; mannan; extraction; characterization; severity factor; hemicellulose film; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Polymeric hemicelluloses with high molecular weight were extracted from rapeseed straw with a straight forward hydrothermal extraction method, evaluated and refined by statistical factorial screening design and ‘severity factor’ analysis. The influence of the extraction conditions, time, temperature and pH of the extraction liquid, on the composition, molecular weight, yield and properties was unveiled. READ MORE

  2. 7. Strategies for building polymers from renewable sources : Using prepolymers from steam treatment of wood and monomers from fermentation of agricultural products

    Author : Margaretha Söderqvist Lindblad; KTH; []
    Keywords : renewable sources; biodegradable polymers; hemicellulose; 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate; modification of hemicellulose; methacrylation reaction; rheology measurements; dynamic-mechanical behavior; 1; 3-propanediol; 1; 4-cyclohexanedimethanol; succinic ac;

    Abstract : A strategic research area today is development of polymericproducts made from renewable sources. The ways of utilizingrenewable sources studied in this thesis are using 1)prepolymers obtained by steam treatment of wood and 2) monomersobtainable by fermentation of agricultural products. 3. 8. Hemicellulose-based wood adhesives

    Author : Tijana Todorovic; Eva Malmström; Linda Fogelström; Francisco Vilaplana; Magdalena Sterley; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : The increasing sustainability concern encourages the society to use sustainable resources. In the wood industry the main component is from a renewable resource, but others are not. One of the fossil-based components is the adhesive. READ MORE

  4. 9. Isolation and chemical modification of arabinoxylan and galactoglucomannan

    Author : Linda Härdelin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Tg; Films; Material properties; Isolation; Etherification; Modification; PEGylation; Hemicellulose;

    Abstract : Today’s society is based on the use of fossil fuels, where oil is used as transportation fuel and as raw material in the petrochemical industry. Efforts are made to increase the use of bio-based materials, since oil is a non-renewable source and a greenhouse gas contributor. READ MORE

  5. 10. Wood hydrolysate Barriers

    Author : Anas Ibn Yaich; Ulrica Edlund; Ann-Christine Albertsson; Margaretha. Söderqvist-Lindblad; Inger Odnevall-Wallinder; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wood hydrolysate; xylan; hemicellulose; layered silicates; oxygen barrier; packaging; film; coaing; birch.;

    Abstract : Wood hemicellulose is an abundant but fairly unexploited renewable feedstock. Recent studies have shown that hemicelluloses have a large potential for use in the food packaging industry as a sustainable alternative to the conventional oxygen-barrier materials used today. READ MORE
