  1. 1. Subject-specific musculoskeletal modeling of the lower extremities in persons with unilateral cerebral palsy

    Author : Olesya Klets; Elena Gutierrez-Farewik; Sven Kleiven; KTH; []
    Keywords : cerebral palsy; moment arm; muscle length; hemiplegic; MRI; subject-specific; musculoskeletal modeling; lower extremities; muscle volume; Mechanical engineering; Maskinteknik;

    Abstract : The computational musculoskeletal models that are used to study muscle moment-generating capacities of persons with movement disorders and planning treatment options must be accurate, and take into account the inter-individual variability of musculoskeletal geometry. In Paper I the methods of creating the subject-specific musculoskeletal model of the lower extremities from magnetic resonance images (MRIs) were developed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Aspects of hand function in children with unilateral impairments : caused by obstetric brachial plexus or hemiplegic cerebral palsy

    Author : Lena Krumlinde Sundholm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Hand function; unilateral impairments; obstetric brachial plexus palsy; hemiplegic cerebral palsy; children; assisting hand;

    Abstract : Unilateral arm/hand dysfunction caused by obstetric brachial plexus palsy (OBPP) or hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP) is most often afflicted on a child in the pre- or perinatal period of life. Despite different origin of the impairments, the outcomes for both groups implicate one well functioning and one dysfunctioning hand, and the consequences for every day task performance are similar. 3. 3. Evaluation of surface electromyography and aspects of muscle strength in persons without motor impairment and in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy

    Author : Barbro Larsson; Katharina Stibrant-Sunnerhagen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Impaired muscle function significantly affects persons with Cerebral Palsy (CP), affects that include muscle strength, fatigue and endurance. This thesis evaluates a test method, an endurance test, and estimates aspects of muscle fatigue and muscle endurance in persons without impaired muscle function and in children with CP. READ MORE

  4. 4. Associations between body functions, activities and health-related quality of life from onset until 18 months after stroke

    Author : Anna-Karin Welmer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Hand function; health-related quality of life; mobility limitation; muscle spasticity; paresis; perceptual disorders; self-care; somatosensory disorders; stroke; synergy;

    Abstract : Introduction and aims: In planning rehabilitation services for patients with stroke, it is important to know the frequency of the impairments and activity limitations presented by the patients and also how each body function and activity is associated with other body functions and activities, as well as the patients health-related quality of life (HRQL) at different time-points after stroke. The overall aims of the thesis were to describe body functions, activities and HRQL in patients with stroke and to analyse the associations between those variables, in the first week and at three and 18 months after stroke onset. 5. 5. Improved Techniques for High-Throughput Molecular Diagnostics

    Author : Mario Curcio; KTH; []
    Keywords : DNA; Molecular Diagnostics;

    Abstract : The amount of information derived from sequencing the humangenome is leading to an exponential increase in the rate atwhich genes and genetic disorders are mapped and characterized.As a consequence, the demand for genetic testing is alsodramatically increasing. READ MORE
