  1. 1. Engineering of Human Fetal Hemoglobin

    Author : Karin Kettisen; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fetal hemoglobin; protein engineering; recombinant protein production; protein purification; chromatography; oxygen carrier; redox reactions; net surface charge; DNA cleavage;

    Abstract : In blood, the oxygen-transporting protein hemoglobin (Hb) governs the oxygenation of cells and tissues. Naturally, this protein has claimed a place in the center of the research field of artificial oxygen therapeutics. READ MORE

  2. 2. Biochemical and Physiological Characterization of Nonsymbiotic Plant Hemoglobins

    Author : Nélida Leiva; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hemoglobin; Non-symbiotic hemoglobin; Sugar beet; Ligand binding; Nitric oxide; Gene expression; Gene overexpression; Poplar; Arabidopsis; Lepidium campestre.;

    Abstract : Hemoglobins (Hb) are usually associated with blood in humans. However, these proteins are widely distributed among living organisms. In plants the most known group are the leghemoglobins. Still, other Hbs that not participate in symbiosis are also found. READ MORE

  3. 3. An Investigation of Peroxidase Activity in Biomimetic and Biological Systems

    Author : Ekaterina Ryabova; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metabolism; Metabolism; enzymologi; Proteiner; enzymology; Proteins; hemoglobin; catalysis; peptide; peroxidase; protoporphyrin IX; Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : In order to create a heme environment which permits biomimicry of heme-containing plant peroxidases and investigate the role played by the vinyl side chains of the porphyrin ring on the stability and, possibly, catalytic activity of model compounds, a number of new synthetic microperoxidases -– hemin-6(7)-gly-his methyl ester (HGH) and hemin-6(7)-gly-gly-his methyl ester (HGGH) and hemin-6,7-bis(gly-gly-his methyl ester) (H2GGH) as well as mesohemin-6(7)-gly-gly-his methyl ester (MGGH) and deuterohemin-6(7)-gly-gly-his methyl ester (DGGH) have been prepared by condensation of a peptide residue with the propionic side chains of hemin, mesohemin and deuterohemin, respectively. Reactivity studies towards different organic and inorganic substrates showed that not only five- but also six-coordinate hemin peptide complexes catalyze the oxidation of substrates by H2O2. 4. 4. Vitreoscilla hemoglobin. In vitro mutagenesis and transcript profiling to improve its biotechnological usefulness

    Author : Charlotte Andersson; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemical technology; Biokemisk teknik; gene expression analysis; transcript profiling; microarray; DNA chips; microaerobic; hypoxia; oxygen-limited; bacterial hemoglobin; Escherichia coli; Vitreoscilla hemoglobin VHb ;

    Abstract : Vitreoscilla is an obligate aerobic bacterium found in oxygen-poor environments such as stagnant ponds and decaying vegetable matter. Vitreoscilla induces the production of a homodimeric hemoglobin (VHb) when subjected to oxygen-limiting conditions. READ MORE

  5. 5. Prevention of hemolysis as a novel strategy to limit hemoglobin-mediated lipid oxidation in fish - towards a more sustainable use of fish raw materials

    Author : Semhar Ghirmai; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hemoglobin; herring Clupea harengus ; fish; rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss ; erythrocyte; hemolysis; side-stream; antioxidant; lipid oxidation; blood plasma;

    Abstract : Hemoglobin (Hb) has been recognized as a main pro-oxidant in fish, causing fast and intense lipid oxidation. This thesis explores the hypothesis that maintaining red blood cells (RBCs) intact for an extended time during fish processing could delay Hb-mediated lipid oxidation. READ MORE
