  1. 1. Non-target Effects of Genetically Modified Trees

    Author : Patrik Blomberg; Anders Wennström; Jan Stenlid; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genetically modified; GM trees; secondary metabolism; phytochemistry; Populus; transgenic; non-target effects; natural enemies; plant-pathogen herbivore interaction; environmental effects; parasitic fungi; herbivorous insect; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi;

    Abstract : To date, few studies have focused on the effects of genetically modified trees (GM trees) on the environment. One concern with GM trees is that they may have unanticipated effects on non-target organisms, i.e. effects on organisms that are not direct targets of the genetically modified trait. READ MORE

  2. 2. The importance of search behavior and movements for spatial distributions of herbivorous insects

    Author : Petter Andersson; Peter Hambäck; Johan Ehrlén; Tomas Roslin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Olfactory search; Habitat heterogeneity; Species-traits; Immigration; Scaling relationships; Patch size; Plant-insect interactions; EAG; Odors; Pheromones; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Insect populations commonly show large spatial variation in density, and much variation have been shown to be explained by the search behavior applied by the insect when locating habitat patches. This thesis explores the importance of odor-mediated attraction for immigration rates of herbivorous insects in relation to the size of the patches and the density of host plants within the patches. 3. 3. The effect of temperature on trophic interactions : Implications for the population dynamics of a forest pest insect in a warmer climate

    Author : Ida Kollberg; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Increase in temperature related to climate change will have consequences on the performance of organisms. Insects could be expected to respond more than other organism groups because they are ectotherms. READ MORE

  4. 4. Interactions between ungulates and forest insects

    Author : Michelle Nordkvist; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In forest ecosystems ungulates and insect herbivores often co-occur and utilise the same host trees. Herbivores that share a host plant can indirectly affect each other through plant induced responses. Such changes may affect plant growth, interactions with other species, and population dynamics. 5. 5. Ecology and Evolution of Resistance to Herbivory : Trichome Production in Arabidopsis lyrata

    Author : Geir Løe; Jon Ågren; Kari Lehtilä; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Plant-animal interactions; herbivory; trichomes; plant resistance; plant defense; divergent selection; local adaptation; GLABROUS1; evolution; matrix population models; LTRE; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I examine variation in occurrence and performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants of the perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. I combine field studies and genetic analysis to (1) examine the function of trichomes as a resistance character in natural populations, (2) compare the magnitude of population differentiation in trichome-production and at putatively neutral marker loci, (3) examine the molecular genetic basis of trichome-production, and (4) quantify the effects of herbivore removal on population growth and relative performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants.
