1. A study of ethylene production via the 2-oxoglutarate dependent pathway in S. cerevisiae
Abstract : The detrimental effect of the petroleum industry on the environment combined with the threat of peak oil has driven the exploration for alternative strategies to produce traditional petrochemicals. Biotechnological production could be an alternative, using microorganisms to convert renewable feedstocks into desired products. READ MORE

2. Bench-Scale Production of Heterologous Proteins from Extremophiles- Escherichia coli and Pichia pastoris based expression systems
Abstract : Over the past few years considerable research attention has been assigned to extremophiles as sources of extremozymes due to their applicability in industrial processes, and the development of eco-friendly technologies. The establishment of efficient production strategies for heterologous proteins is an empirical process requiring broad background knowledge on available expression systems together with their major advantages and shortcomings. 3. Protein production, characterization and structure determination in structural genomics
Abstract : This thesis covers the process from expression of a heterologous gene in Escherichia coli to structure determination of a protein by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The first part concerns structural genomics-related parallel screening studies on the effect of fusion tags (in particular the His tag) on protein solubility and the use of fusion tags in fast, parallel purification protocols intended for initial biophysical characterization of human proteins produced in E. 4. Feruloyl esterases - Evaluation of their potential for biotechnological applications
Abstract : Owing to the current efforts to find sustainable alternatives to petrochemical based industries and technologies, enzymatic degradation and valorization of plant biomass has been attracting interest. Due to the complexity of plant biomass, an array of enzymes is required to hydrolyze it, including esterases. READ MORE

5. Metabolic Engineering of Recombinant Protein Production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Abstract : The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a widely used cell factory for the production of fuels, chemicals, and it also provides a platform for the production of many heterologous proteins of medical or industrial interest. In this thesis, random and rational approaches, such as vector design, host engineering, fermentation analysis, UV Mutation, coupled with high-throughput systems biology techniques (including whole genomic sequencing, microarray analysis and flux analysis) and integrated analysis (Reporter feature technique), were employed to engineer cellular properties more effectively and purposefully to construct cell factories for protein production.
