  1. 16. Distribution and fate of polychlorinated biphenyls within the pelagic microbial food web

    Author : Petra Wallberg; Per Larsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; zoologi; Zoology;

    Abstract : The composition and production of the plankton community in aquatic environments will in turn influence the food-web structure of larger predators, nutrient cycling, the sinking flux and, hence, the fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants. The aim of the research presented here was to study the distribution and fate of PCBs within the microbial food web, including bacteria, flagellates, ciliates, and phytoplankton. READ MORE

  2. 17. Nitrogen fixation among marine bacterioplankton

    Author : Kjärstin H. Boström; Lasse Riemann; Åke Hagström; Grieg Steward; Högskolan i Kalmar; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacterioplankton; Nitrogen fixation; Bakterioplankton; Kvävefixering; Cyanobakterier; Kvävefixerande bakterier; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : While bacterioplankton indisputably control vital biogeochemical paths in the cycling of carbon and nutrients in the world’s oceans, our knowledge about the functional and genetic diversity of bacterioplankton communities is negligible. In this thesis, molecular and more traditional microbiological methods were used to study the specific function of N2-fixation and in a general sense diversity of marine bacterioplankton species. 3. 18. Allochthonous and autochthonous carbon sources of lake bacterioplankton

    Author : Emma Kritzberg; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; bacterial community composition; bacterial growth efficiency; bacterioplankton; carbon subsidy; dissolved organic carbon; limnology;

    Abstract : Organic substrates for pelagic bacteria are derived from dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the water column that originates either from primary production from within the lake itself (autochthonous), or import of organic matter from the terrestrial watershed (allochthonous production). This thesis addresses the utilization of allochthonous versus autochthonous carbon (C) sources by lake bacterioplankton. READ MORE

  4. 19. The importance of terrestrial carbon in plankton food webs

    Author : Cesar Bolivar Daniel; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; lakes; carbon; zooplankton; Spumella elongata; Poterioochromonas malhamensis; flagellates; bacteria; stable isotopes; photochemistry; autochthonous; DOC; allochthonous; plankton; Ekologi; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : Allochthonous substances, i.e. produced in terrestrial ecosystems, are known to fuel bacterial production in humic lakes. I observed that allochthonous carbon subsidizes bacteria even at high levels of phytoplankton biomass. READ MORE

  5. 20. The Niches of Bacterial Populations in Productive Waters : Examples from Coastal Waters and Four Eutrophic Lakes

    Author : Alexander Eiler; Stefan Bertilsson; Lars J. Tranvik; Janet Jansson; Katherine McMahon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; diversity; 16S rRNA; phytoplankton; bloom; pathogen; carbon cycle; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Recent research in microbial ecology has focused on how aquatic bacterial communities are assembled. Only a few of these studies follow a “Gleasonian” approach where the roles of single bacterial populations are in focus. READ MORE
