  1. 6. Benthic-Pelagic Microbial Interactions and Carbon Cycling in Clearwater Lakes

    Author : Eva Andersson; Anna-Kristina Brunberg; Lars Tanvik; Kristina Sundbäck; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; microphytobenthos; phytoplankton; heterotrophic bacteria; interactions; nutrients; carbon cycling; clearwater lakes; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the interactions among microbiota in clearwater lakes. Field sampling and field experiments were performed to evaluate interactions among microbiota and the importance of benthic versus pelagic microbiota in terms of biomass and production. In addition, carbon cycling in an oligotrophic clearwater lake was calculated. READ MORE

  2. 7. Pelagic microorganisms in the northern Baltic Sea : Ecology, diversity and food web dynamics

    Author : Johnny Berglund; Agneta Andersson; Ramon Massana; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; resource limitation; predation limitation; microbial food web; heterotrophic microorganisms; nanoflagellates; ciliates; protists; resource heterogeneity; chrysomonads; chrysophytes; group-specific PCR-DGGE primers; Baltic Sea; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Heterotrophic microorganisms are important for the flow of carbon and nutrients in the sea. Bacteria, nanoflagellates and ciliates are relevant components of the pelagic food web. In order to be able to predict the outcome of e.g. READ MORE

  3. 8. Functional Profiling Of Metabolic Regulation In Marine Bacteria

    Author : Saraladevi Muthusamy; Jarone Pinhassi; Torsten Thomas; Sarala Devi Muthusamy; Institutionen för biologi och miljö (BOM) Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine microbiology; physiology; heterotrophic bacteria; adaptive strategies; survival; proteomics; growth phase; proteorhodopsin; inorganic sulphur oxidation; anaplerotic CO2 fixation; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science;

    Abstract : Oceans are powered by active, metabolically diverse microorganisms, which are important in regulating biogeochemical cycles on Earth. Most of the ocean surface is often limited by nutrients, influencing bacterial growth and activities. READ MORE

  4. 9. The role of terrestrial and phytoplankton-derived organic matter in planktonic food webs

    Author : Anja Wenzel; Ann-Kristin Bergström; Tobias Vrede; Maarten Boersma; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Daphnia; phytoplankton; heterotrophic bacteria; terrestrial particulate organic material; food quality; food quantity; fatty acids; oligotrophic; Light:Nutrient-Hypothesis; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Lakes are important global ecosystems and many of them are nutrient-poor (unproductive). Especially in northern boreal latitudes, lakes may be heavily subsidized by terrestrial organic material (t-OM) from peat layers in the catchment. READ MORE

  5. 10. Autotrophic and heterotrophic culture of Nordic microalgae in wastewater for lipid production

    Author : Jean Claude Nzayisenga; Anita Sellstedt; Francesco G. Gentili; Christiane Funk; Ashton Keith Cowan; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : It is well established that society’s main means for producing energy, the combustion of fossil fuels, is unsustainable and contributes to global warming. Microalgae have high potential for the production of biodiesel and energy source that can at least partially replace fossil fuels. READ MORE
