  1. 1. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy in Industrial Hygiene Applications : Assessment of Emissions from and Exposures in Wood Processing Industries

    Author : Urban Svedberg; Christer Edling; Bo Galle; Hans-Erik Högberg; Nils Plato; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; FTIR; Exposure; Emission; Saw mills; Wood pellets; Tracer gas; Monoterpenes; Hexanal; Carbon monoxide; Open path FTIR; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : This thesis evaluates the use of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) as an approach to the increasingly difficult air sampling challenges within the field of occupational and environmental hygiene. The application of FTIR is exemplified by the assessment of emissions from and exposures in the sawmill and pellet industries. READ MORE

  2. 2. Experimental studies on acute health effects of acrolein and other aldehydes

    Author : Aishwarya Mishra Dwivedi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Aldehydes are reactive and ubiquitous in indoor as well as outdoors and can give rise to significant health problems in humans, e.g. irritation of the eyes and toxic effects on the upper respiratory tract. This thesis focuses on the irritating and inflammatory properties of three commonly occurring aldehydes; acrolein, crotonaldehyde and hexanal. READ MORE

  3. 3. Catalyst Deactivation by Coke Formation. A Study of the Carbonaceous Layer on a Used Hydrogenation Catalyst

    Author : Åsa Wrammerfors; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The carbonaceous layer, formed on a Ni/SiO2 catalyst, and its influence on the selectivity in a hydrogenation reaction have been studied. The model reaction system studied was the consecutive hydrogenation of 2-ethyl-hexenal: Exposure of the catalyst to 2-ethyl-hexenal or cyclopentadiene at elevated temperatures before the hydrogenation, yielded an increased selectivity toward the formation of 2-ethyl-hexanal. 4. 4. Influence of Oxygen Concentration on Lipid Oxidation in Food during Storage

    Author : Kristina Andersson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Lipid oxidation in cream powder and rapeseed oil was studied at different oxygen concentrations in the presence or absence of the catalytic factors light and copper. The oxygen concentrations in the headspace of the product ranged from 21 % down to 0.03 %, but particular emphasis was laid on oxygen concentrations below 2 %. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fermentative hydrogen and methane productions using membrane bioreactors

    Author : Julius Akinbomi; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Encapsulation; Inhibition; hydrodynamics; hydrogen; methane; fruit flavour; Membrane bioreactor; Resursåtervinning; Resource Recovery;

    Abstract : The role of energy as a stimulant for economic growth and environmental sustainabilityof any nation has made the focus on green fuels, including fermentative hydrogen (bioH2) andmethane (bioCH4), to be a priority for the World’s policy makers. Nigeria, as the most populousAfrican country, with worsening energy crisis, can benefit from the introduction of the bioH2 andbioCH4 technologies into the country’s energy mix, since such technologies have the potential ofgenerating energy from organic wastes such as fruit waste.
