  1. 1. Surgical reconstruction of functional and anatomical defects in the diaphragmatic hiatus

    Author : Apostolos Analatos; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is characterized mainly by heartburn and acid regurgitation but in the more severe forms even organic manifestations can occur. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is the main medical treatment of GERD but antireflux surgery should be looked upon as an effective long-term therapeutic option. READ MORE

  2. 2. Late Quaternary Biostratigraphy and Paleoceanography of the central Arctic Ocean

    Author : Daniela Hanslik; Martin Jakobsson; Marit-Solveig Seidenkrantz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic Ocean; Quaternary; biostratigraphy; foraminifera; paleoceanography; Other earth sciences; Övrig geovetenskap; Marine Geoscience; marin geovetenskap;

    Abstract : The central Arctic Ocean is one of the least explored deep sea regions and long biostratigraphic sediment records are sparse. The main focus of this thesis is the Arctic Ocean foraminiferal record and its application to reconstruct paleoceanographic variations and summer sea ice cover changes between late Quaternary interglacial periods. 3. 3. Ancient genomics of Baltic seals : Insights on the past Baltic grey seal and harp seal populations

    Author : Maiken Hemme Bro-Jørgensen; Kerstin Lidén; Morten Tange Olsen; Aikaterini Glykou; Olle Karlsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Ancient DNA; Baltic Sea; DNA preservation; extinction; mitogenome; seal hunting; sex identification; arkeologi med inriktning mot laborativ arkeologi; Scientific Archaeology;

    Abstract : This thesis aims to study and describe the ancient populations of grey and harp seals in the Baltic Sea, and to present new methodological approaches for general use in ancient DNA studies.The dissertation is comprised of five studies: a review of the use of paleogenetics in studying ancient human-marine mammal interactions; a method paper investigating patterns of DNA preservation in ancient pinniped samples; a method paper presenting a genetic sex identification method for ancient pinnipeds; a population genomic study of the Baltic grey seal; and a population genomic study of the now extinct Baltic harp seal. 4. 4. Paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic changes in northeast Thailand during the Holocene

    Author : Sakonvan Chawchai; Barbara Wohlfarth; Richard Bindler; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Paleoenvironment; paleoclimatic; sediment; peat; multi-proxy; Asian monsoon; the Holocene; Marine Geology; maringeologi;

    Abstract : The long-term climatic and environmental history of Southeast Asia is still fragmentary. This thesis therefore aims at studying lake sediment/peat sequences using a multi-proxy approach to reconstruct the environmental history and the impact of past changes in monsoon variability and intensity on lake ecosystems in Thailand. 5. 5. Cambro-Ordovician microorganisms: acritarchs and endoliths

    Author : Martin Stockfors; Malgorzata Vidal-Moczydlowska; John S. Peel; Kenneth John Dorning; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Cambrian; Ordovician; acritarch; endolith; Kolguev Island; North Greenland; Stratigraphy; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : Organic-walled microfossils are abundant and taxonomically diverse in Cambrian-Ordovician strata; some are important for biostratigraphy and for the correlation of geological successions. New assemblages of Cambrian-Ordovician acritarchs from Kolguev Island, Arctic Russia and Middle Cambrian ichnofossils of endoliths from Peary Land, North Greenland are studied. READ MORE
