  1. 1. Arctic Atmospheric Rivers : Eulerian and Lagrangian features, and trends over the last 40 years

    Author : Cheng You; Michael Tjernström; Abhay Devasthale; Heikki Järvinen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic; Atmospheric river; Stratocumulus; Blocking; Turbulence; Longwave irradiance; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : Arctic Atmospheric rivers, termed ‘warm-and-moist intrusion’ (WaMAI) in this thesis, transporting heat and moisture into the Arctic from lower latitudes, is a key contributor to the amplified warming in the Arctic under global change (Arctic Amplification). However, the warming effect of WaMAIs and its transformation along the trajectories into high Arctic still remain unclear, as well as their relation with the large-scale atmospheric circulation. 2. 2. The role of inland waters in the carbon cycle at high latitudes

    Author : Erik Lundin; Jan Karlsson; Reiner Giesler; Robert Striegl; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lakes; streams; carbon C ; carbon dioxide CO2 ; methane CH4 ; dissolved inorganic carbon DIC ; boreal; sub-arctic; arctic; emission; sediments; burial; budget; limnologi; Limnology; Earth Sciences with Specialization Environmental Analysis; geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : Understanding the drivers of climate change requires knowledge about the global carbon (C) cycle. Although inland waters play an important role in the C cycle by emitting and burying C, streams and lakes are in general overlooked in bottom-up approached C budgets. READ MORE

  3. 3. Properties and Origin of Arctic Aerosols

    Author : Ann-Christine Engvall; Jörg Gumbel; Frode Stordal; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic aerosols; Arctic troposphere; air-mass transport; Atmosphere and hydrosphere sciences; Atmosfärs- och hydrosfärsvetenskap; atmosfärvetenskap; Atmospheric Sciences;

    Abstract : The present thesis deals with the origin and physics of aerosols in the Arctic atmosphere. These show a large annual variability due to changes of the photochemical and cloud processes as well as of the synoptic-scale atmospheric pressure patterns. READ MORE

  4. 4. Tundra meets atmosphere : Seasonal dynamics of trace gas exchange in the High Arctic

    Author : Norbert Pirk; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic; tundra; methane; carbon dioxide;

    Abstract : Arctic environments have experienced strong warming in recent decades, which is affecting the carbon cycle of tundra ecosystems.Degrading permafrost, diminishing snow cover, and changing hydrology are examples of ongoing processes that affect the land-atmosphere interactions and seasonal ecosystem dynamics. 5. 5. On the Arctic Seasonal Cycle

    Author : Jonas Mortin; Gunilla Svensson; Rune G. Graversen; Wolfgang Dierking; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic climate; Seasonal melt-freeze transitions; Arctic sea ice and snow; Active microwave measurements; Climate model evaluation; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : The seasonal cycle of snow and sea ice is a fundamental feature of the Arctic climate system. In the Northern Hemisphere, about 55 million km2 of sea ice and snow undergo complete melt and freeze processes every year. READ MORE
