  1. 1. The role of the lymph node stroma in cancer and aging

    Author : Tove Bekkhus; Maria H. Ulvmar; Timothy P. Padera; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lymph node; Stroma; High endothelial venule HEV ; Lymphatic endothelial cells LECs ; Breast cancer; Metastasis; Lipomatosis; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : The function of the lymph node (LN) stroma is crucial for the induction of an adaptive immune response. The stroma includes lymphatic vessels, high endothelial venules (HEVs) and mesenchymal cells (MCs). In this thesis, I have been investigating the role of the LN stroma in cancer and aging. READ MORE

  2. 2. Vascular targeting for enhanced cancer immunotherapy

    Author : Maria Georganaki; Anna Dimberg; Sara Mangsbo; Lena Claesson-Welsh; Wolf Hervé Fridman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cancer immunotherapy; tumor vasculature; endothelial activation; IDO1; ELTD1; tertiary lymphoid organ; Biologi; Biology;

    Abstract : Induced angiogenesis and chronic inflammation are major components of tumor immunosuppression. The scope of this thesis is to understand the role of the vasculature in anti-tumor immunity and thereby to improve cancer immunotherapy. READ MORE

  3. 3. Leukocyte-endothelial interactions in arteries in vivo : a new concept in the study of physiology and disease in large blood vessels

    Author : Einar Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Atherosclerosis; leukocyte; cell adhesion molecule; chemokine; shear rate; capture; rolling; adhesion; subendothelial; cytokine; artery; intravital; in vivo;

    Abstract : Pathophysiological events in large blood vessels contribute to immense morbidity and mortality in our society. A major clinical problem is a disease known as atherosclerosis. It involves a slow inflammatory deposition of lipid within the walls of large arteries that with time will weaken the arterial wall. READ MORE

  4. 4. Interaction of human blood platelets, lymphocytes and monocytes with vascular laminin isoforms

    Author : Gezahegn Gorfu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Vascular laminin isoforms; extracellular matrix; integrins; cell adhesion; cell migration; high endothelial venules; lymphocytes; monocytes; platelets; leukocyte extravasation;

    Abstract : Inflammatory and immune responses play a fundamental role in both health and disease, and leukocytes are important actors in these processes. Migration of the leukocytes to sites of injury or inflammation is a crucial component of innate and adaptive immunity. It is currently accepted that leukocyte extravasation is a multistep process. 5. 5. Immunopathogenic mechanisms in inflammatory myopathies

    Author : Pernilla Englund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Myositis; capillaries; muscle fibers; IL-1 alpha; MHC; adhesion molecules;

    Abstract : The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) are characterized by symmetrical, proximal muscle weakness and by inflammatory infiltrates in muscle tissue. Based on different clinical as well as histopathological features the IlMs can be separated into polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and inclusion body myositis (IBM). READ MORE
