16. Detached Eddy Simulation for Aerospace Applications
Abstract : With the continuous growth in air traffic that we see nowadays, comes an increase in the requirements needed to be satisfied in order to certify an aircraft for operation. These stricter regulations affect aspects such as CO2 emissions, sound pollution and so on, pushing manufacturers to aim for lighter, more efficient, more robust designs. READ MORE

17. Simulation of individual cells in flow
Abstract : In this thesis, simulations are performed to study the motion ofindividual cells in flow, focusing on the hydrodynamics of actively swimming cells likethe self-propelling microorganisms, and of passively advected objects like the red bloodcells. In particular, we develop numerical tools to address the locomotion ofmicroswimmers in viscoelastic fluids and complex geometries, as well as the motion ofdeformable capsules in micro-fluidic flows. 18. Super-grid Linear Eddy Model (SG-LEM): Efficient mode- and regime-independent combustion closure for Large Eddy Simulation (LES)
Abstract : Next-generation combustion technology such as ‘lean burn’ and HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) present new challenges for combustion modelling. The presence of locally varying combustion modes (premixed vs. non-premixed) and regimes (fast/non-fast chemistry vs. READ MORE

19. Driver modeling: Data collection, model analysis, and optimization
Abstract : This thesis concerns aspects of driver modeling, with an emphasis on critical near-crash scenarios, involving time spans of around 10 s of driving. Here, driver modeling has been studied using both computer simulations and experiments carried out in a high-fidelity driving simulator. READ MORE

20. Methods for efficient modelling of progressive failure in laminated fibre-reinforced composites
Abstract : To meet increasing demands on reduced CO2 emissions, the automotive industry is currently very active in research to reduce vehicle weight by incorporating laminated composites (primarily carbon fibre-reinforced polymers) into structural components. Historically, composite materials have mainly been used in the aerospace industry, whereby CAE-based design and development tools for composite structures have been developed primarily to the specific needs and requirements in this industry.
