  1. 1. Wearable systems and sensors for the assessment of motor control : Development and validation of methods for clinical assessment of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus

    Author : Tomas Bäcklund; Nina Sundström; Anders Eklund; Jan Malm; Kaj Lindecrantz; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gait; step-width; heel-heigt; balance; trunk sway; idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus; IMU; Inter-rater reliability; kinematics; medical informatics; medicinsk informatik;

    Abstract : Human gait and balance are controlled by automatic processes in the central nervous system, and in sensory and proprioceptive systems. If a disturbance occurs in any of these complex structures, it may lead to balance and gait problems. READ MORE

  2. 2. Procedural and postoperative pain-reducing methods in newborns

    Author : Björn A Larsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Analgesia; anaesthesia; topical; local; epidural; lidocame; prilocaine; bupivacame; venepuncture; heel-lancing; skin thickness; skin perfusion; infant; neonate;

    Abstract : The neonate has a functioning nociceptive system. However, neonates are probably more vulnerable than the older infants and adults to the negative effects of pain. Untreated pain and stress stimuli may have long-term effects. It is, therefore, very important to find ways to reduce pain and painful stimuli in neonates. READ MORE

  3. 3. Hip fracture prevention by screening and intervention of elderly women in primary health care

    Author : Daniel M Albertsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : hip fracture; fractures; mortality; women; aged; risk factors; risk assessment; accidental falls; questionnaires; accident prevention; house calls; exercise therapy; drug therapy; bone density; BMD; absorptiometry; intervention studies; primary health care; Sweden;

    Abstract : Hip fracture prevention by screening and intervention of elderly women in Primary Health Care Daniel Albertsson Background – One in four Swedish women suffers a hip fracture (HF). In order to identify high-risk women we developed clinical 4-item scores as the FRAMO (Fracture and Mortality) Index, evaluated heel bone mineral density (BMD) and undertook interventions to improve mobility, reduce falls and HF. 4. 4. Hips at risk osteoporosis and prevention of hip fractures

    Author : Anna Ekman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Bone Densitometry; external hip protectors; hip fracture; mortality risk; nursing home residents; osteoporosis; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; Orthopaedics; ortopedi;

    Abstract : Hip fractures are the most serious consequence of osteoporosis, and are one important cause of morbidity and mortality among the elderly. Prophylactic treatment for hip fractures are now available. Early detection of individuals with increased risk for hip fractures is therefor of great interest. READ MORE

  5. 5. Bone Mineral Density Determination in Children. Evaluation of a novel method and application to Duchenne muscular dystrophy

    Author : Ann-Charlott Söderpalm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : adolescents; age- and gender-matched; Becker; bone densitometry; bone markers; bone mineral density; calciotropic hormones; children; DXA; DXL; Duchenne; glucocorticoids; muscular dystrophy; normative; reference values; skeleton;

    Abstract : Aims: The overall aims of this thesis were to evaluate the dual-energy X-ray and laser (DXL) method for bone densitometry measurements of the calcaneus in children, to provide reference data for bone mineral density (BMD) in the heel bone in young children and to apply the DXL technique to patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and conduct a survey about bone health of DMD patients. Study populations and methods: The DXL Calscan method was modified and adapted for measurements in children and applied to bone densitometry in all subsequent studies. READ MORE
