  1. 6. Soil-living archaea: Influence of pH, carbon and nitrogen on their abundance and activity

    Author : Anna Sterngren; MEMEG; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Archaea; ammonia-oxidizing archaea; soil; AOA; AOB; root exudates; gross nitrification; qPCR; pH; carbon cycle; nitrogen cycle;

    Abstract : During the last decade it has been discovered that around 2% of the soil-living prokaryotes belong to the domain Archaea. In many soils the most abundant archaeal group is the ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) that, in addition to ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), preform the first and rate-limiting step in the nitrification process. 2. 7. Interactions between metals and bacteria : Importance for metal speciation

    Author : Lena Brynhildsen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the interactions between metals and microorganisms with respect to* Toxicity of metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Zn)* Mineralization of metal-organic complexes (citric acid, histidine)* Metal adsorption (Cs, Sr, Eu, Hg, Zn, As)Most of the studies were made on the gram-negative bacterium Klebsiella oxytoca, but the work also involved a Serratia as as well as mixed cultures of microorganisms from soil systems.Most previous studies, reported in the literature, on the toxic effects of metals on microorganisms have been performed at high nutrient levels, despite the fact that microorganisms in nature normally live under energy-limited conditions. 3. 8. Factors Affecting Rates of Change in Soil Bacterial Communities

    Author : Marie Pettersson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; Plant ecology; Växtekologi; bacteriology; Microbiology; DGGE; PLFA; TdR-incorporation; function; structure; tolerance; adaptation; pH; soil bacterial community; temperature;

    Abstract : The soil bacterial community is under the constant influence of its environment. Changing any of the factors affecting the bacterial community will induce a selection pressure which, with time, will change the community. In this work the effect of changing the temperature or pH on the soil bacterial community was studied. READ MORE

  4. 9. Fermentation of wheat starch hydrolysate by Lactococcus lactis: Factors affecting product formation

    Author : Karin Hofvendahl; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nutrients; temperature; pH; optical isomers; maltose; wheat; starch hydrolysate; Lactococcus lactis; lactic acid; SSF; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : Lactic acid exists as two optical isomers, D- and L-lactic acid. For the production of biodegradable poly-lactic acid an optically pure product is desirable, but a racemate of known and constant ratio can also be used. Lactic acid can be produced either synthetically or fermentatively. READ MORE

  5. 10. Oviposition cues as a tool for developing a new malaria control strategy

    Author : Lynda Eneh; Anna-Karin Borg-Karlson; Willem Takken; KTH; []
    Keywords : Anopheles gambiae; Malaria; Oviposition; Volatile compounds; GC-MS; DGGE; Sorption; Fungi; Bacteria; Physicochemical parameters; Nut grass; Bermuda grass; Anopheles gambiae; Malaria; Äggläggning; Flyktiga ämnen; GC-MS; DGGE; Sorptionen; Svampar; Bakterier; Gräs; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Anopheles gambiae sensu lato mosquitoes are among the dominant malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa. However, not much is known about the oviposition behaviour of these species necessary for the development of malaria vector control strategies. READ MORE
