1. Processing Lignocellulosic Biomass into Ethanol - Implications of High Solid Loadings
Abstract : Fuel ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass has the potential to provide a sustainable replacement for traditional oil-based fuels. This dissertation assesses the processing of three different lignocellulosic materials – spruce, wheat straw and giant reed – at industrially relevant solid loadings. The work is divided into two main parts. READ MORE

2. Bioprocess development for biochemical conversion of lignocellulose
Abstract : Due to its low environmental impact and high maturity of the fuel ethanol market, lignocellulosic ethanol is a promising option for reducing the carbon footprint in the transport sector. The characteristics of lignocellulosic feedstocks, such as varied sugar composition, low sugar density, low solubility, recalcitrance to enzymatic degradation, and inhibitors formed during thermochemical pretreatment, have so far limited the production process, and costs for conversion of lignocellulosic materials to ethanol are still high. 3. On mechanical characterization and multi-scale modeling of Lithium-ion batteries
Abstract : Over the last few decades, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have been extensively used in portable instruments due to their high energy density and low self-discharge rate. Recently, lithium-ion batteries have emerged as the most promising candidate for electric vehicles and stationary energy storage. READ MORE

4. Experimental Characterization of Electrodes and Multi-Scale Modeling of Swelling Induced Stresses in Lithium-ion Batteries
Abstract : Over the last few decades, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have been extensively used in portable instruments due to their high energy density and low self-discharge rate. Recently, lithium-ion batteries have emerged as the most promising candidate for electric vehicles and stationary energy storage. READ MORE

5. Flow structures in solid-liquid suspensions in mixing and confined jets
Abstract : This thesis is an investigation of the influence of solid particles on different liquid flow systems. Large-scale periodic fluctuations such as macro instabilities (MI) and particle cloud dynamics in a mixing vessel and confined jets were studied experimentally and compared to numerical results from CFD simulations.
