  1. 16. Inhibition of light-induced colour reversion of wood-containing papers by means of coating

    Author : Helena Fjellström; Hans Höglund; Magnus Paulsson; Arthur Ragauskas; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; High-yield pulp; CTMP; birch; light-induced; ageing; photo-stabilising; lignin; coating; pigment; kaolin; calcium carbonate; titanium dioxide; binder; FWA; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The main purpose of this thesis was to find ways to maintain a low level of light‐induceddiscolouration at an increased addition of mechanical and chemimechanical pulps in coated highqualityfine paper and magazine paper grades. Current technology allows the production of highyieldpulps such as thermomechanical and chemimechanical pulps with properties suitable formanufacturing high‐quality paper or paperboard with a low basis weight. 2. 17. On the Process Development of an ECF Light Bleaching Sequence for the Production of High Quality Softwood Kraft Pulp and Low AOX Formation

    Author : Sara Starrsjö; Juha Fiskari; Mikael Lindström; Olena Sevastyanova; Maria Boman; Peter Sandström; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemical Engineering; Natural Science; Chemical Pulping; Softwood; Kraft Pulp; Bleaching; ECF light bleaching; Chlorine Dioxide; AOX formation; Delignification; Bleachability;

    Abstract : The aim of this work is to contribute to the process development of the ECF light bleaching sequence Q(OP)D(PO) by providing a better understanding of the bleaching of softwood kraft pulp. There are few published studies on this type of sequence, and more knowledge is needed on how to reduce environmental impact, improve cost-effectiveness and ensure a high pulp quality. READ MORE

  3. 18. GASIFICATION-BASED BIOREFINERY FOR MECHANICAL PULP MILLS

    Author : Jie He; Engstrand Per; Zhang Wennan; Olof Björkqvist; Dahlquist Erik; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Gasification; Mechanical Pulping; Bio-fuels; Power Generation; Biomass Residues; ASPEN Plus;

    Abstract : The modern concept of "biorefinery" is dominantly based on chemical pulp mills to create more value than cellulose pulp fibres, and energy from the dissolved lignins and hemicelluloses. This concept is characterized by the conversion of biomass into various biobased products. READ MORE

  5. 20. Modifying kraft pulping to produce a softwood pulp requiring less energy in tissue paper production

    Author : Hafizur Rahman; Per Engstrand; Mikael E. Lindström; Louise Logenius; Peter Sandström; Ulf Germgård; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : Modifying kraft pulp; tissue dewatering; polysulfide; sodium borohydride; tensile index; hemicellulose;

    Abstract : Modification of softwood kraft pulp by the addition of either polysulfide (PS) or sodium borohydride (NaBH4) has been shown to increase the pulp yield due to a higher retention of glucomannan.  The pulps with higher yield gave a paper with higher tensile index than reference pulp, especially at lower degrees of refining.
