  1. 1. Empirical data in the philosophy of mind: free will, higher-order thought, and misrepresentation

    Author : Asger Kirkeby-Hinrup; CogComlabbet; []
    Keywords : Consciousness; higher-order thought; misrepresentation; Free Will; change blindness; Charles Bonnet Syndrome; Choice Blindness; Wholeheartedness; Introspection;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates two areas of the philosophy of mind where empirical data play a role in philosophical argument. The first area, investigated in three papers, is the higher-order thought theory of consciousness, and specifically the possibility of higher-order thoughts misrepresenting what state an individual is actually in. 2. 2. Introspecting representations

    Author : Susanna Radovic; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; displaced perception; first person authority; higher order perception; higher order thought; introspection; phenomenal character; phenomenal externalism; representational content; qualia;

    Abstract : The subject matter of this thesis is the question of whether a plausible and informative account of introspection can be advanced given that mental states are representations of external affairs. The first part of the thesis presents a general overview of theories of introspection by describing how philosophers have accounted for, in turn; the object of introspection, the epistemic status of introspective beliefs, and the introspective process as such. 3. 3. Coherence and Reliability: Studies in Bayesian Epistemology

    Author : Stefan Schubert; Teoretisk filosofi; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; coherence; Bayesian epistemology; reliability; higher order beliefs; reliability-conduciveness; truth-conduciveness; formal coherence theory; witness scenarios;

    Abstract : In this thesis the connection between coherence and reliability is investigated. The question may be phrased as follows: does the fact that a set of testimonies is coherent imply that the witnesses who have reported these testimonies are reliable? The same question may also be expressed in terms of beliefs: does the fact that a set of beliefs is coherent imply that the beliefs were reliably produced? Traditionally, coherence theorists have thought that coherence is connected to truth, but in this dissertation the thesis is that it is rather connected to reliability. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of Coherence and Correlations on Transport through Nanostructures

    Author : Olov Karlström; Matematisk fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fysicumarkivet A:2012:Karlström;

    Abstract : This dissertation deals with the effects of coherence and correlations on transport through nanostructures. Simulations are mainly performed using the second order von Neumann approach, a method capable of dealing with these effects in the presence of higher order tunneling. READ MORE

  5. 5. Acceptance and Cognitive Restructuring : Analyses and comparisons from an emotion regulation perspective

    Author : Martin Wolgast; Institutionen för psykologi; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Cognitive restructuring; Acceptance; Emotion regulation; Cognitive Behavior Therapy; Acceptance and Commitment Therapy;

    Abstract : The general aim of the present thesis was to further our understanding of cognitive restructuring and acceptance, both as concepts and as psychological processes related to emotion regulation. In doing this, concepts and processes related to cognitive restructuring and acceptance were examined in four different studies using different designs and methodologies. READ MORE
