    Keywords : nonlinear distortion; optical pulse shaping; dispersion-management; eye-diagram; cross-phase modulation; optical sampling; optical fiber applications; multiplexing; parametric amplification; demultiplexing; optical pulses; fiber optical communication; nonlinear systems; time division multiplexing; four-wave mixing; polarization-mode dispersion; optical signal processing; fiber optical nonlinearities; fiber ring laser; soliton robustness; mode-locking; optical filters; networks;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with short optical pulse generation from actively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring lasers (ML-EFRL) and their applications in all-optical signal processing (optical sampling and switching) and transmission experiments for high-capacity fiber optic systems. In future ultra-high bit-rate optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) systems, one of the key requirements is to develop reliable optical pulse sources that can generate high quality optical pulses.     Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fiber optical parametric amplifiers; optical time division multiplexing; highly nonlinear fiber; pulse generation; wavelength division multiplexing; optical time domain reflectometry.; four-wave mixing; cross-gain saturation; optical gain and bandwidth; transmission;

    Abstract : This thesis describes fiber optical parametricamplifiers (FOPAs) used in single- and multi-wavelength channel applications.The FOPA was operated as a pulse source in optical transmission systems at bit rates of 10-160 Gb/s. It was evaluated in terms of bit error rate after transmission with link lengths up to 650 km. READ MORE

  5. 5. Noise and Saturation Properties of Fiber Optical

    Author : Per Kylemark; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : nonlinear fiber optics; four-wave mixing; single-pumped; regeneration; saturation; dual-pumped; noise figure; parametric amplification;

    Abstract : Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers (FOPAs) are based on a highly efficient Four-wave Mixing process in highly nonlinearfibers and have gained a lot of interest since it was shown that ahigh gain can be obtained. They are multi-functional devices thatare not only limited to amplifying signals, but their wide range ofapplicability also include wavelength conversion, pulse-generation,optical sampling and also regeneration at very high bit-rates.
