  1. 1. Seed mobility and connectivity in changing rural landscapes

    Author : Alistair G. Auffret; Sara Cousins; Robin Pakeman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biodiversity; Conservation; Functional connectivity; Historical ecology; Human-mediated dispersal; Invasive species; Landscape Ecology; Long-distance dispersal; Restoration; Seed bank; Seed dispersal; Seed rain; Structural connectivity; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : The success or failure of many organisms to respond to the challenges of habitat destruction and a warming climate lies in the ability of plant species to disperse between isolated habitats or to migrate to new ranges. European semi-natural grasslands represent one of the world's most species-rich habitats at small scales, but agricultural intensification during the 20th century has meant that many plant species are left only on small fragments of former habitat. 2. 2. The ecology of the plankton fauna in the Gulf of Bothnia

    Author : Olof Sandström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Zooplankton; ecology; the Baltic; selective predation production biology; patchiness;

    Abstract : The geographical distribution of the Gulf of Bothnia zooplankton species is presented together with observations of abundancies and vertical distributions. The historical development of this plankton community in the last 70 years is discussed.Spring and summer development of the plankton fauna was studiedin the Bothnian Bay. READ MORE

  3. 3. Plant-climate interactions over historical and geological time

    Author : Sharon A Cowling; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; atmospheric CO2; plant evolution; palaeoecology; plant-climate interactions; vegetation modelling; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Abstract : Data-model comparisons are a useful approach to elucidating the relative influence of past climate change on vegetation dynamics over various spatial global, regional, stand) and temporal (historical, geological) scales. Comparisons between changes in tree species abundance reconstructed from pollen and simulated from a forest gap model, for example, indicate that based solely on climate change over the past 1500 years, southern Scandinavian forests should be co-dominated by Tilia and Fagus. 4. 4. Treeline dynamics in short and long term perspectives : observational and historical evidence from the southern Swedish Scandes

    Author : Lisa Öberg; Bengt-Gunnar Jonsson; Leif Kullman; Ulf Segerström; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii; Picea abies; Pinus sylvestris; climate change; monitoring; treeline advance; clones; megafossils; immigration; Holocene; cryptic refugia; Swedish Scandes; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestrisk ekologi;

    Abstract : Against the background of past, recent and future climate change, the present thesis addresses elevational shifts of alpine treelines in the Swedish Scandes. By definition, treeline refers to the elevation (m a.s.l. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ecology and evolution of coastal Baltic Sea 'dead zone' sediments

    Author : Elias Broman; Mark Dopson; Nils Risgaard-Petersen; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Baltic Sea; sediment; oxygen; metatranscriptomics; metagenomics; 16S rRNA gene; RNA-seq; dead zone; re-oxygenation; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Abstract : Since industrialization and the release of agricultural fertilizers began, coastal and open waters of the Baltic Sea have been loaded with nutrients. This has increased the growth of algal blooms and because a portion of the algal organic matter sinks to the sea floor, hypoxia has increased. READ MORE
