11. Theory of electronic structure and transport in heterostructure nanowires
Abstract : Today, semi-conductor nanowires can be grown with very high precision, using epitaxy. This allows for studies of new nanowire-based quantum devices, likely to be part of novel quantum technologies in the future. This thesis concerns nanostructures based on InAs nanowires. READ MORE

12. Templating and self-assembly of biomimetic materials
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the use of biomolecular assemblies for creating materials with novel properties. Several aspects of biomimetic materials have been investigated, from fundamental studies on membrane shaping molecules to the integration of biomolecules with inorganic materials. READ MORE

13. Influence of Ageing on Material Properties at Interfaces in Composite Insulators
Abstract : High quality of internal interfaces in composite insulators for high voltage applications is necessary for securing durability of their functionality. Weak macroscopic interfaces between the glass fibre reinforced (FRP) epoxy core and the silicone rubber (SIR) housing, such as spots with reduced bonding or a loss of the adhesion as well as presence of foreign contaminants, can appear to have an accelerating effect on the evolution of ageing processes, though it may take years before the first signs of processes endangering the insulator function appear. 14. Respiratory symptoms and lung function in foundry workers exposed to low molecular weight isocyanates
Abstract : Background: Some foundries use the Hot Box method, which involves use of a nitrogen-containing binder system to produce cores for hollow castings. During the process, low molecular weight isocyanates such as isocyanic acid (ICA) and methyl isocyanate (MIC) are formed, which are potentially toxic. READ MORE

15. Hybrid Plasmonic Devices for Optical Communication and Sensing
Abstract : Hybrid plasmonic (HP) waveguides, a multi-layer waveguide structure supporting a hybrid mode of surface plasmonics and Si photonics, is a compromise way to integrate plasmonic materials into Si or SOI platforms, which can guide optical waves of sub-wavelength size, and with relative low propagation loss. In this thesis, several HP waveguides and devices are developed for the purposes of optical communications and sensing. READ MORE
