6. On Crack Dynamics in Brittle Heterogeneous Materials
Abstract : Natural variation, sub-structural features, heterogeneity and porosity make fracture modelling of wood and many other heterogeneous and cellular materials challenging. In this thesis, fracture in such complicated materials is simulated using phase field methods for fracture. READ MORE

7. Local Effects On Icing Forecasts for Wind Power In Cold Climate
Abstract : This thesis will examine the local effects of land cover on icing forecasts. In Paper I, a single column model was used to test the sensitivity of icing forecasts to land cover fraction. Here, the ice accretion forecast was found to be highly sensitive to the wind magnitude response to the surface roughness. READ MORE

8. Structural Investigations of Complex Glasses by Solid-state NMR
Abstract : This PhD thesis presents structural investigations of amorphous inorganic materials: oxide and oxynitride glasses and mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs), by solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). Lanthanum oxide and oxynitride [La-Si-(Al)-O-(N)] glasses have a large number of potential applications due to their physical properties. READ MORE

9. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow in plane and cylindrical geometries
Abstract : This thesis deals with numerical simulation of turbulentflows in geometrically simple cases. Both plane and cylindricalgeometries are used. The simplicity of the geometry allows theuse of spectral methods which yield a very high accuracy usingrelatively few grid points. A spectral method for planegeometries is implemented on a parallel computer. READ MORE

10. Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Reactive Flows under HCCI Engine Conditions
Abstract : Large Eddy Simulation (LES) modeling is developed to study homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion under different engine operation and mixture conditions, including real engine configurations and generic test cases. A previously developed HCCI model has been validated by comparing the simulation results with engine experiments. READ MORE
