1. Undrained shear strength in clay slopes - Influence of stress conditions. A model and field test study
Abstract : To counteract natural hazards such as landslides, current methods for evaluation of soil properties as a mean for determining the safety level of natural slopes need to be refined. The empirical relationships used for estimation of the undrained shear strength from piezocone and field vane test are based on the stress conditions valid for horizontal ground and normally consolidated or slightly overconsolidated soil. 2. Fatigue Assessment of Container Ships – a Contribution to Direct Calculation Procedures
Abstract : Within the field of marine structural engineering, the introduction of new materials and material classes, the development of production techniques and new design, and new requirements imposed by authorities are examples which justify a need for continuous revisit and update of fatigue assessment methodologies of marine structures. This thesis contributes to the development and improvement of fatigue assessment methodology for ship structures. READ MORE

3. Stress-laminated-timber bridge decks subjected to ultimate loads
Abstract : Stress-laminated-timber (SLT) bridge decks are a satisfactory alternative to conventional short-span bridges in terms of cost and performance. SLT decks are made from several deck laminations positioned side by side. READ MORE

4. Analysis of rock stress and rock stress measurements with application to Äspö HRL
Abstract : The process of choosing a site for a nuclear waste repository means that many aspects have to be taken into consideration. One of these is that the repository has to be mechanically stable for a long time. The mechanical stability of the rock is very difficult to determine. READ MORE

5. Crustal stress studies using microearthquakes and boreholes
Abstract : The state of stress in the crust is essential for the understanding of geodynamic processes such as the transmission of plate driving forces through the lithosphere and the triggering of earthquakes. This thesis describes the development and application of new methods for the estimation of crustal stresses. READ MORE
