  1. 1. The aging brain and changes in cognitive performance : Findings from morphometry and quantitative susceptibility mapping of iron

    Author : Ninni Persson; Håkan Fischser; Kristine B. Walhovd; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; brain aging; volumes; ndividual differences; QSM; cognitive aging; iron; episodic memory; fluid-; crystalized abilities; sex differences; gender differences; psykologi; Psychology;

    Abstract : Brain aging is a heterogeneous phenomenon, and this thesis illustrates how the course of aging can vary within individuals over time and between individuals as a function of age, sex, and genetic variability. We used two contrasts from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), namely spin-lattice T1-weighted imaging, and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) from gradient-echo images, to picture the aging brain, by means of morphometric measures and brain-iron concentrations. 2. 2. Studies on PCSK9 in the regulation of cholesterol metabolism

    Author : Lena Persson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; aging;

    Abstract : Elevated levels of plasma cholesterol, mainly in low density lipoproteins (LDL), are a major risk factor for coronary heart disease. The level of plasma LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) is largely dependent on the number of hepatic LDL receptors (LDLRs). READ MORE

  3. 3. Risk factors for dementia. Lifestyle, hormones, neurochemistry, and genetics

    Author : Jenna Najar; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dementia; Alzheimer s disease; Epidemiology; Marital status; Leisure time activity; Menopause; Polygenic risk scores; APOE genotype;

    Abstract : Objective: The aim of this thesis was to expand the understanding about the effects of lifestyle factors, indicators of endogenous estrogens, and genetic factors on the risk of dementia and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Method: We used population-based samples from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies (H70-studies), the Prospective Population Study of Women (PPSW), and the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging (MCSA 70+ study). 4. 4. Prospective and retrospective memory in normal and pathological aging

    Author : Åsa Livner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : This thesis aims to explore how prospective and retrospective memory are affected by health in old age. In this regard, we have focused on dementia disorders, depressive symptomatology, and thyroid functions. Prospective memory involves remembering to perform actions, such as paying bills or taking one s medication. READ MORE

  5. 5. The association between steroid hormones and cognitive performance in adulthood

    Author : Petra Thilers; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate whether endogenous estrogen and testosterone were associated with cognitive performance in adulthood and whether hand preference affected the pattern of sex differences in cognitive performance. The analyses in Studies I-IV were based on data from the Betula project in Umeå, Sweden; a population-based longitudinal study on aging and memory. READ MORE
