  1. 1. The aging brain and changes in cognitive performance : Findings from morphometry and quantitative susceptibility mapping of iron

    Author : Ninni Persson; Håkan Fischser; Kristine B. Walhovd; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; brain aging; volumes; ndividual differences; QSM; cognitive aging; iron; episodic memory; fluid-; crystalized abilities; sex differences; gender differences; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Brain aging is a heterogeneous phenomenon, and this thesis illustrates how the course of aging can vary within individuals over time and between individuals as a function of age, sex, and genetic variability. We used two contrasts from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), namely spin-lattice T1-weighted imaging, and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) from gradient-echo images, to picture the aging brain, by means of morphometric measures and brain-iron concentrations. 2. 2. Studies on PCSK9 in the regulation of cholesterol metabolism

    Author : Lena Persson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : aging;

    Abstract : Elevated levels of plasma cholesterol, mainly in low density lipoproteins (LDL), are a major risk factor for coronary heart disease. The level of plasma LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) is largely dependent on the number of hepatic LDL receptors (LDLRs). READ MORE

  3. 3. Risk factors for dementia. Lifestyle, hormones, neurochemistry, and genetics

    Author : Jenna Najar; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dementia; Alzheimer s disease; Epidemiology; Marital status; Leisure time activity; Menopause; Polygenic risk scores; APOE genotype;

    Abstract : Objective: The aim of this thesis was to expand the understanding about the effects of lifestyle factors, indicators of endogenous estrogens, and genetic factors on the risk of dementia and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Method: We used population-based samples from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies (H70-studies), the Prospective Population Study of Women (PPSW), and the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging (MCSA 70+ study). 4. 4. The association between steroid hormones and cognitive performance in adulthood

    Author : Petra Thilers; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate whether endogenous estrogen and testosterone were associated with cognitive performance in adulthood and whether hand preference affected the pattern of sex differences in cognitive performance. The analyses in Studies I-IV were based on data from the Betula project in Umeå, Sweden; a population-based longitudinal study on aging and memory. READ MORE

  5. 5. Adaptability of skeletal muscle to hormone treatment in relation to gender and aging

    Author : Fushun Yu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : skinned muscle fiber; gender; aging; steroid hormone; V0 electrophoresis; MyHC; MyLC; enzymehistochemistry; hyperthyroid rat; thyroid hormone receptor TR deficient TR[alpha]1 - -; TR[beta]- -; and TR[alpha]1- -[beta]- - mice;

    Abstract : The aims of this study were to investigate the expression of myosin isoforms, muscle contractility at the cell level, and changes in these parameters in response to altered hormonal status in aging male and female rodents. In addition, by using mice lacking thyroid hormone receptors (TR[alpha]1 or TR[beta] or TR[alpha]1/[beta]) we tried to improve our understanding of the mechanisms by which thyroid hormone regulates the expression of specific MyHC isoforms via these different nuclear receptors.
