  1. 1. Proteomic profiling of bacterial host adaptation : Racing the Red Queen

    Author : Ola Kilsgård; Institutionen för immunteknologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Proteomics; Mass Spectrometry; Systems biology; Biomarker; Host adaptation; Bacteria; Streptococcus pyogenes;

    Abstract : Despite the discovery of antibiotics almost a century ago, infectious diseases continue to be a substantial cause of human mortality and morbidity worldwide, especially in developing countries. The adverse affects of infectious diseases are thought to increase over the coming years as the widespread misuse of antibiotic leads to the emergence of strains for which current therapies are ineffective. 2. 2. Helicobacter pylori : multitalented adaptation of binding properties

    Author : Sara Henriksson; Thomas Borén; Göran Larson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Helicobacter pylori; adherence; receptor specificity; adaptation; pH; BabA; Leb; recombination; secretor phenotype; recombinant cell lines;

    Abstract : Helicobacter pylori infects and persistently colonizes the stomach, which results in gastritis and in some individuals peptic ulcer disease or gastric cancer. Adherence of H. pylori to the epithelium is an important factor for development of disease. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Art of Repeating Oneself : Migratory self-adaptation: media transformation and authorship in Persepolis and The Patience Stone

    Author : Nafiseh Mousavi; Liviu Lutas; Karin Kukkonen; Rossholm Anna Sofia; Moira Inghilleri; Jens Schröter; Jan-Noël Thon; Golnar Nabizadeh; Linnéuniversitetet; []

    Abstract : This thesis studies the process and products of migratory self-adaptation: the practice of a migrant author recreating their own work in a new medium, and the baggage it brings with itself. Migratory self-adaptation is developed and analyzed in this research through a comparative and processual analysis of two cases of adaptation: Persepolis, a French autobiographical graphic novel written and drawn by Marjane Satrapi, the Franco- Iranian artist and writer, later turned into an animation movie co-written and codirected by Satrapi herself; and The Patience Stone, a novel written in French by Atiq Rahimi, the Franco-Afghan author, which is adapted to a homonymous film in Dari- Persian, co-written and directed by the author. 4. 4. Adaptation of Helicobacter pylori Adherence Properties in Promotion of Host Tropism and Inflammatory Disease

    Author : Marina Aspholm; Rino Rappuoli; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : H. pylori; BabA; SabA; adhesin; blood group antigens; sialylated; phase variation; hemagglutination; selectin; adaptation; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : Being among the most prevalent of persistent infectious agents in humans worldwide, Helicobacter pylori induces chronic inflammation (gastritis), which may progress to peptic ulceration and stomach cancer. The ability to adhere to the gastric mucosa is considered to be both a colonization and virulence property of H. pylori. For adherence, H. READ MORE

  5. 5. Evolution and host-specific adaptations of Legionella pneumophila

    Author : Anaísa B. Moreno; Lionel Guy; Dan I. Andersson; Fredrik Söderbom; Alexander W. Ensminger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolution; Legionella pneumophila; host-adaptation; experimental evolution; Acanthamoeba castellanii; transfection; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : How bacteria evolve pathogenic traits is shaped by their communities and environments. Legionella pneumophila is ubiquitous in aquatic habitats, where it persists by replicating within a broad range of protozoan hosts. Using the same mechanisms, L. READ MORE
