  1. 1. Functional dualism of antimicrobial host defence peptides

    Author : Åse Björstad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : antimicrobial; apoptosis; cathelicidin; host defence peptide; interleukin 8; LL-37; permeabilisation;

    Abstract : Antimicrobial host defence peptides are central to innate immunity and many possess direct antimicrobial actions on bacteria as well as indirect immunomodulatory functions on human leukocytes. Different variants of the bifunctional Helicobacter pylori peptide, Hp(2-20), were synthesised and inhibition zone assays and chemiluminescence systems were employed for determination of direct antimicrobial action and superoxide release (immunomodulatory) from human neutrophils, respectively. 2. 2. Microgels as Carriers for Antimicrobial Peptides : Surface-bound microgels, and factors affecting peptide interactions

    Author : Lina Nyström; Martin Malmsten; Per Hansson; L. Andrew Lyon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antimicrobial peptides; Biomaterial coating; Drug delivery; Host defence peptides; Microgels; pH-responsive; Surface-bound; Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry; Farmaceutisk fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : With a growing number of multi-resistant bacteria against conventional antibiotics, there is an urgent need to identify new antimicrobial therapeutics. One example that has gained considerable interest is antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). READ MORE

  3. 3. Novel Aspects of the Coagulation System in Host Defence

    Author : Praveen Papareddy; Lund Dermatologi och venereologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Host defence peptides; Coagulation system; Sepsis; Thrombin; TFPI-1; TFPI-2; HCII;

    Abstract : Bacterial infections are a major global threat to public health and sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Sepsis incidence is rising, with supportive treatments and antibiotics being the main treatment possibilities. READ MORE

  4. 4. Targeting bacterial infections by using immunomodulatory host defence peptides and proteins

    Author : Martina Kalle; Lund Dermatologi och venereologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Host dfence peptides; Sepsis; Immunomodulation; Heparin cofactor II;

    Abstract : Bacterial infections and sepsis are amongst the leading causes of death worldwide. Sepsis is caused by an uncontrolled systemic host response towards an invading pathogen. Due to the engagement of various systems including cellmediated responses, the coagulation and complement cascades, treatment of sepsis remains challenging. READ MORE

  5. 5. Novel host defence mechanisms during bacterial infections

    Author : Malin Elvén; Lund Dermatologi och venereologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ApoE; Complement System; TFPI-2; Antimicrobial peptides; AMP; Immunolgobulins; endotoxins; Staphylococcus aureus; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Escheria coli;

    Abstract : The immune system has evolved through thousands of years and its architecture has challenged the medical field since the first hieroglyphs and will likely continue do so. With our co-evolution with millions of other species, the complexity to treat infectious diseases has been a race in increasing speed ever since. READ MORE
