1. Magnetron Sputter Epitaxy of GaN Epilayers and Nanorods
Abstract : In this research, electronic-grade GaN(0001) epilayers and nanorods have been grown onto Al2O3(0001) and Si(111) substrates, respectively, by reactive magnetron sputter epitaxy (MSE) using liquid Ga as a sputtering target. MSE, employing ultra high vacuum conditions, high-purity source materials, and lowenergy ion assisted deposition from substrate biasing, is a scalable method, lending itself to large area GaN synthesis. 2. Nanostructured carbon-based thin films : prediction and design
Abstract : Carbon-based thin films are a vast group of materials of great technological importance. Thanks to the different bonding options for carbon, a large variety of structures (from amorphous to nanostructured) can be achieved in the process of film synthesis. READ MORE

3. The k-assignment polytope, phylogenetic trees, and permutation patterns
Abstract : In this thesis three combinatorial problems are studied in four papers. In Paper 1 we study the structure of the k-assignment polytope, whose vertices are the mxn (0,1)-matrices with exactly k 1:s and at most one 1 in each row and each column. READ MORE

4. Design of Transition-Metal Nitride Thin Films for Thermoelectrics
Abstract : Thermoelectric devices are one of the promising energy harvesting technologies, because of their ability to convert heat (temperature gradient) to electricity by the Seebeck effect. Furthermore, thermoelectric devices can be used for cooling or heating by the inverse effect (Peltier effect). READ MORE

5. Scandium Nitride Thin Films for Thermoelectrics
Abstract : Thermoelectric devices are one of the promising energy harvesting technologies, since they can convert heat (i.e. a temperature gradient) to electricity. This result leads us to use them to harvest waste heat from heat engines or in power plants to generate usable electricity. READ MORE
