    Abstract : The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the narrative mechanisms and imagery that fictional works employ to conceptualize and communicate complex human experiences of space, time and memory. Furthermore, this study shows how contemporary cities change the way we think about such basic concepts by analyzing narratives that employ and encourage multisensory, spatiotemporal understandings of reality characterized by permeable boundaries between the material, social and imaginary domains.     Abstract : This dissertation investigates the relationship between linguistic and stylistic innovation in nineteenth-century literature on the one hand and shifts in the dynamics of the economic sign system on the other. It draws on prior work on parallels between language and money and argues specifically that developments in the nineteenth-century novel can be understood in terms of the contemporaneous economic history, and that the two sign systems of language and money display structural similarities in this period.     Abstract : In 1970, Japanese researcher Masahiro Mori published a seminal paper where he hypothesized that robots that appear human-like but are still distinguishable from being human would not attract people towards them, but instead cause an uncanny sensation.
