  1. 16. Towards a deeper understanding of the human brain

    Author : Evelina Sjöstedt; Mathias Uhlén; Jan Mulder; Caroline Kampf; Elly Hol; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Brain; organization; RNA; classification; mapping; proteins; antibodies; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Identifying the proteome variation in different parts of the body provides fundamental molecular details, enabling further findings and mapping of tissue specific proteins. By combining quantitative transcriptomics with qualitative antibody based proteomics, the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) project aims to protein profile each human protein-coding gene. READ MORE

  2. 17. Epigenetic Dysregulations in the Brain of Human Alcoholics : Analysis of Opioid Genes

    Author : Igor Bazov; Georgy Bakalkin; Catharina Lavebratt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neuropeptides; dynorphin; human brain; alcohol dependence; epigenetics; gene transcription;

    Abstract : Neuropeptides are special in their expression profiles restricted to neuronal subpopulations and low tissue mRNA levels. Genetic, epigenetic and transcriptional mechanisms that define spatiotemporal expression of the neuropeptide genes have utmost importance for the formation and functions of neural circuits in normal and pathological human brain. 3. 18. Finite Element Modeling of the Human Head

    Author : Svein Kleiven; KTH; []
    Keywords : Finite element method FEM ; Human head; brain; head injury; epidemiology; statistics; simulations.;

    Abstract : The main objectives of the present thesis were to define the dimension of head injuries in Sweden over a longer period and to present a Finite Element (FE) model of the human head which can be used for preventive strategies in the future. The annual incidence of head injuries in Sweden between 1987 and 2000 was defined at over 22 000, cases most of which were mild head injuries. READ MORE

  4. 19. Temporal dynamics of brain plasticity : characterizing brain structural changes during skill acquisition

    Author : Tomás Mediavilla; Daniel Marcellino; Alexandra Badea; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Motor learning; brain plasticity; structural plasticity; magnetic resonance imaging; voxel-based morphometry; tractography; connectivity; motor cortex; posterior parietal cortex; cerebellum; vesicular glutamate transporter;

    Abstract : Traditionally, structural plasticity in the human brain has been considered to follow a linear or asymptotic increase over the course of training. However, recent studies using structural MRI revealed transient increases in grey matter volume (GMV) with learning. READ MORE

  5. 20. Functional modelling of the human timing mechanism

    Author : Guy Madison; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Psychology; Brain mechanisms; Brownian motion; drift; dynamical systems; fractal; human; Gaussian noise; Hurst exponent; time; time series analysis; timing; Psykologi; Psychology; Psykologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : Behaviour occurs in time, and precise timing in the range of seconds and fractions of seconds is for most living organisms necessary for successful interaction with the environment. Our ability to time discrete actions and to predict events on the basis of prior events indicates the existence of an internal timing mechanism. READ MORE
