  1. 16. Non-indigenous zooplankton : the role of predatory cladocerans and of copepods in trophic dynamics

    Author : Marc Andersen Borg; Fredrik Wulff; Markku Viitasalo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acartia tonsa; Bythotrephes longimanus; Cercopagis pengoi; egg production; fitness; food web changes; ingestion rates; invasive species; metabolic balance; mortality; non-indigenous zooplankton; predation impact; salinity tolerance; stable isotopes; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : Human-mediated introductions of non-indigenous species now threaten to homogenize the biota of the Globe, causing huge economic and ecological damage. This thesis studies the ecological role of 3 invasive planktonic crustaceans, the omnivorous copepod Acartia tonsa (western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific) and the predatory cladocerans, Cercopagis pengoi (Ponto-Caspian) and Bythotrephes longimanus (Eurasian). 2. 17. Coping with environmental stress : from the individual and population perspective

    Author : Johanna Gardeström; Michael Tedengren; Tina Elfwing; Mats Grahn; Gary Carvalho; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental stress; Genetic diversity; Multi-level approach; Invertebrates; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; Systems Ecology; systemekologi;

    Abstract : Natural stress and disturbances are important factors affecting the structure and function of ecosystems. However the magnitude of stress has escalated due to anthropogenic activities. Environmental monitoring and toxicity assessments try to protect ecosystems from unwanted human alterations. READ MORE

  3. 18. Evolutionary and Ecological Effects of Metal Pollution on Coastal Diatoms

    Author : Björn Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phytoplankton; Diatoms; Skeletonema marinoi; Toxicity; Heavy metals; Copper; Evolution; Baltic Sea; Population genomics; Physiology; Ecology; Metabarcoding; Sedimentology; Resting stages; Dose-response relationships;

    Abstract : Oceans are changing rapidly in response to human activities, such as toxic pollution, eutrophication, and climate change. Diatoms are major primary producers in the oceans with short generation times, flexible reproductive strategies, and high standing genetic diversity. READ MORE

  4. 19. Natural and human-induced carbon storage variability in seagrass meadows

    Author : Martin Dahl; Martin Gullström; Miguel A Mateo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Blue carbon sequestration; Carbon storage variability; Seagrass meadows; Anthropogenic disturbances; Climate change; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : Seagrasses are considered highly important CO2 sinks, with the capacity to store substantial quantities of organic carbon in the living biomass and sediments, and thereby acting as a buffer against climate change. In this thesis, I have studied carbon storage variability in temperate and tropical seagrass habitats and identified factors influencing this variation. READ MORE

  5. 20. Polybrominated diphenylethers in the environment - Local and long range transport

    Author : Arnout ter Schure; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Substance Flow Analysis; Spatial Variation; Sources; PCB; PBDE; Latitude; Global Fractionation; Frogs; Deposition; Atmosphere; Baltic Sea; Ekologi; Temperature; Washout ratio; Ecology;

    Abstract : I have studied the sources, long range transport, and rates of flow of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), from the technosphere to the Baltic ecosystems. PBDEs are mainly used in polymers, which are applied in electrical equipment to prevent overheating or flashover and are produced in large quantities. READ MORE
