    Abstract : Islet transplantation has found its niche in diabetes treatment. It has contributed to a better quality of life and better glycemic control of patients with diabetes suffering from severe hypoglycemia that are not eligible for vascularized pancreas transplantation. Islet isolation is a technically challenging procedure. READ MORE

  2. 2. Pancreatic Islet Transplantation : Modifications of Islet Properties to Improve Graft Survival

    Author : Sanja Cabric; Olle Korsgren; Bo Nilsson; Peetra Magnusson; Michael Breimer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; Diabetes; islet transplantation; islets of Langerhans; coagulation activation; IBMIR; hirudin; heparin; growth factor; angiogenesis; Medicin;

    Abstract : During the past decade clinical islet transplantation has become a viable strategy for curing type 1 diabetes. The limited supply of organs, together with the requirement for islets from multiple donors to achieve insulin independence, has greatly limited the application of this approach. READ MORE

  3. 3. Islet Xenotransplantation : An Experimental Study of Barriers to Clinical Transplantation

    Author : Peter Schmidt; Olle Korsgren; Bo Nilsson; Karin Ulrichs; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; xenotransplantation; islets of Langerhans; rejection; diabetes; porcine endogenous retroviruses; quantitative RT-PCR; cytokines; animal models; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : In the field of transplantation, the increasing deficit of human donors have lead to an interest in animals as an alternative source of organs and tissues. Different in vitro systems and rodent models of xenotransplantation were used to examine the most significant barriers that have to be overcome, before isolated islets of Langerhans from pigs can be used as a cure for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in humans. 4. 4. Islet insulin secretory patterns in diabetes and the role of UCP2

    Author : Jian-Man Lin; Valdemar Grill; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; type 1 diabetes; type 2 diabetes; NOD; GK; congenes; KKAy; human; islet; glucose; insulin release; oscillation; frequency; amplitude; oxidation; respiration; UCP2; western blot; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : During development of type 1 and type 2 diabetes plasma insulin patterns are altered. Since the islet insulin release pattern has been implicated in this development, insulin secretion from single islets was studied and linked to the islet protein levels of uncoupling protein-2 (UCP2). 5. 5. Islet amyloid polypeptide : Perspectives on the storage and plasma concentration of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) in rodent models of obesity and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and aspects of amyloidogenesis andelimination of IAPP

    Author : Arnold Leckström; Sture Falkmer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The present study was aimed to investigate plasma concentrations and pancreatic storage of IAPP in relation to that of insulin in four different animal models with hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, obesity and/or NIDDM. The NMRI mice fed a high-fat diet for six months, the Psammomys on high-energy (HE) diet and the genetically obese (ob/ob) mice studied for one year all revealed significantly elevated plasma IAPP concentrations, while the IAPP levels were unchanged in the spontaneously diabetic GK rats during a glucose tolerance test.
