  1. 1. Application of indigenous materials in drinking water treatment

    Author : Herbert Mpagi Kalibbala; Bengt Hultman; Joaquin Martinez; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Coagulant aid; drinking water treatment; dual media filtration; Moringa oleifera; primary coagulant; trihalomethanes; volcanic ash; Water in nature and society; Vatten i natur och samhälle;

    Abstract : Volcanic ash and Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) were investigated as indigenous materials for drinking water treatment based on problems identified at Kampala and Masaka water treatment plants in Uganda. READ MORE

  2. 2. Effects of dissolved humic matter on phytoplankton

    Author : Jessica von Einem; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton; PAR; DOC; Water colour; production;

    Abstract : Water colour is currently increasing in thousands of lakes in the northern hemisphere due to an increased input of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and more specifically coloured disscolved humic matter (DHM). I studied how water colour affects the light climate in the epilimnion and, as a consequence, phytoplankton biomass, species composition and production in lakes in southern Sweden. READ MORE

  3. 3. Toxicity of Inorganic Aluminium in Humic Streams

    Author : Cecilia M. Andrén; Emil Rydin; Hans Borg; Ann-Kristin Eriksson Wiklund; Björn-Olav Rosseland; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Inorganic Al; toxicity; acidification; humic streams; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Aluminium (Al) has been recognised as a main toxic factor alongside pH in acidified water ecosystems. The toxic effect of Al has been attributed to inorganic Al (Ali), though there are few in situ studies in ambient humic waters which are the focus of this thesis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Viral Loop Dynamics in Temperate and Polar Freshwaters

    Author : Christin Säwström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; akvatisk ekologi; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; temperate; polar; freshwaters; nutrient limitation; bacterial mortality; lysogeny; dissolved organic carbon; humic; Arctic; Antarctic; Bacteria; Virus; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi;

    Abstract : All cellular organisms in aquatic environments are susceptible to virus attack. Viruses are the smallest but most abundant biological entities in freshwaters. This thesis describes interactions between viruses and bacteria in temperate and polar freshwaters with particular emphasis on Arctic and Antarctic aquatic systems. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Role of Picophytoplankton in Lake Food Webs

    Author : Stina Drakare; Roger I. Jones; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; picophytoplankton; competition; heterotrophic bacteria; nutrients; humic DOC; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Picophytoplankton were inferior competitors for inorganic phosphorus compared to heterotrophic bacteria. This may be due to the source of energy available for the heterotrophs, while cell-size was of minor importance. However, picophytoplankton were superior to large phytoplankton in the competition for nutrients at low concentrations. READ MORE
