  1. 1. Ecological interactions in human modified landscapes : Landscape dependent remedies for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem services

    Author : Arvid Bolin; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : Central place foraging; Agriculture; Competition; Ecosystem service; Species coexistence; bumble bees; landscape ecology; Biodiversity; Agri-environment scheme; Central place foraging; jordbruk; konkurrens; landskaps ekologi; humlor; bin;

    Abstract : Modern agricultural practices have led to an intensification of the agricultural landscape which has negatively affected both biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. In my thesis I have used ecological theory of optimal foraging to try and explain how landscape structure, landscape composition and agricultural management can explain the loss of biodiversity and how remedies can efficiently be implemented. 3. 3. How the sensory ecology of the bumblebee affects their functional traits

    Author : Vun Wen Jie; Emily Baird; Mikael Carlsson; Martin How; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bumblebee; functional morphological traits; intraspecific differences; allometry; DRA; micro-CT; co-existence; Functional Zoomorphology; funktionell zoomorfologi;

    Abstract : Morphological traits are important for trait-based ecological studies as they allow for the prediction of biodiversity across the biosphere. Currently, the predictive power of trait-based ecology is not often applied to terrestrial arthropods, even though they provide us with important agricultural, ecological, and cultural value. 4. 4. Go with the flow : visually mediated flight control in bumblebees

    Author : Nellie Linander; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : insect; vision; Bombus terrestris; flight control; optic flow; centring; flight speed; height; viewing angle; learning flight; Insect; vision; Bombus terrestris; flight control; optic flow; centring; flight speed; height; viewing angle; learning flight;

    Abstract : Despite their small brains and tiny eyes, flying insects are capable of detecting and avoiding collisions with moving obstacles, and with remarkable precision they navigate through environments of different complexity. For this thesis, I have investigated how bumblebees use the pattern of apparent image motion that is generated in their eyes as they move through the world (known as optic flow), in order to control flight. 5. 5. The visual ecology of bees - Tales of diverse eyes and behaviours

    Author : Pierre Tichit; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal behaviour; Arthropods; Bumblebees; Compound Eyes; Crystalline cones; Flight control; Image analysis; Landing; Sensory ecology; Stingless bees; Vision; X-ray microtomography;

    Abstract : The buzzing flight of bees is a popular summer hit. Yet, outside of a few familiar species of honeybees and bumblebees, these fantastic little creatures are still mostly unknown. With about twenty-five thousand species, bees are a very diverse group. They can be found in drastically different habitats. READ MORE
