  1. 16. Simulation of collective phenomena in microswimmer suspensions

    Author : Dora Bardfalvy; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Collective motion is ubiquitous in biological and synthetic systems across manylength- and timescales. On the macroscopic scale, examples include schools of fish, herds of sheep and flocks of birds. On the microscopic scale, bacteria, algae and synthetic self-propelled particles exhibit a range of collective phenomena. READ MORE

  2. 17. Novel and refined small-scale approaches to determine the intrinsic dissolution rate of drugs

    Author : Sara B. E. Andersson; Göran Alderborn; Göran Frenning; Peter Langguth; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; dissolution; intrinsic dissolution rate; poorly water-soluble compounds; single particle dissolution; solubility; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Pharmaceutical Science;

    Abstract : Many drugs are administered as crystalline particles compressed into tablets and taken orally. When the tablet reaches the gastrointestinal tract, it disintegrates and the drug particles dissolve in the gastrointestinal fluid. The dissolved molecules are absorbed across the intestinal membranes into the bloodstream to reach their target sites. READ MORE

  3. 18. Dispersal in free-living, marine, benthic nematodes : passive or active processes?

    Author : Jörgen Ullberg; Emil Ólafsson; John Lambshead; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nematod; dispersial; water column; choice; algal mats; disturbance; meiofauna; community; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Meiofauna, and especially marine nematodes are common in sediments around the world. Despite very wide ranging distributions in many nematode species, little is presently known about their dispersal mechanisms shaping these patterns. Rafting, and perhaps ballast water transport has been suggested as viable means for nematode long-range transport. READ MORE

  4. 19. Accuracy, efficiency and robustness for rigid particle simulations in Stokes flow

    Author : Anna Broms; Anna-Karin Tornberg; Mattias Sandberg; Eric Keaveny; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Stokes flow; rigid particles; accuracy; fundamental solutions; method of images; multiblob; contact avoiding; complementarity problem; barrier method; elliptic PDE; grid optimisation; pair-correction; boundary integral equations; Stokesflöde; noggrannhet; stela partiklar; fundamentallösningar; randintegralekvation; reflektionspunkter; multiblob; kontaktundvikande algoritmer; komplementaritetsproblem; barriärmetod; elliptisk PDE; gridoptimering; parkorrektion; Numerical Analysis; Numerisk analys;

    Abstract : The thesis concerns simulation techniques for systems of nano- to micro-scaled rigid particles immersed in a viscous fluid, ubiquitous in nature and industry. With negligible fluid inertia, the set of PDEs known as the Stokes equations can be used to model the hydrodynamics. READ MORE

  5. 20. Hydraulic Modelling of Dynamics in Regulated Rivers

    Author : Anton Burman; J. Gunnar I. Hellström; Knut Alfredsen; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : The Nordic countries hold a significant portion of the European hydropower production. One advantage of hydropower is its ability to store water in reservoirs in times when the energy demand is low. READ MORE
