  1. 6. Solute transport in fractured rocks : Analysis of analytical solutions and determination of transport parameters

    Author : Shuo Meng; Longcheng Liu; Ivars Neretnieks; Lanru Jing; Klaus-Peter Kröhn; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fractured rock; Radionuclide transport; Analytical solution; Dispersion mechanisms; Electromigration.; Sprickigt berg; Radionukidtransport; analytisk lösning; Dispersionsmekanismer; Elektromigration.; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : In order to facilitate the assessment of the safety and function of deep geological repositories for radioactive waste, several models have been developed to describe water flow and transport of solutes in fractured crystalline rock. The rock around the repository is described and modelled as a network of water-bearing fractures. READ MORE

  2. 7. Studies on instability and optimal forcing of incompressible flows

    Author : Mattias Brynjell-Rahkola; Dan S. Henningson; Ardeshir Hanifi; Philipp Schlatter; François Gallaire; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; hydrodynamic stability; optimal forcing; resolvent operator; Laplace preconditioner; spectral element method; eigenvalue problems; inverse power method; direct numerical simulations; Falkner–Skan–Cooke boundary layer; localized roughness; crossflow vortices; Blasius boundary layer; localized suction; helical vortices; lid-driven cavity; cylinder flow; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering Mechanics;

    Abstract : This thesis considers the hydrodynamic instability and optimal forcing of a number of incompressible flow cases. In the first part, the instabilities of three problems that are of great interest in energy and aerospace applications are studied, namely a Blasius boundary layer subject to localized wall-suction, a Falkner–Skan–Cooke boundary layer with a localized surface roughness, and a pair of helical vortices. 3. 8. Hydrodynamic control of retention in heterogeneous aquifers and fractured rock

    Author : Hua Cheng; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Chin-Fu Tsang; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Aquifer; Fracture; groundwater; First-order solution; Monte-Carlo simulation; Nu-clear waste; Heterogeneity; Retention processes; Matrix diffusion; Prediction; Evaluation; Travel time; Flow rate; ; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, fluid flow and solute transport in heterogeneous aquifers and particularly in frac-tured rock have been investigated using Lagrangian Stochastic Advective-Reaction (LaSAR) framework. The heterogeneity of the aquifer structure or fracture configuration, as well as the various reaction/retention processes have been considered in the modelling approach. READ MORE

  4. 9. Experimental and numerical investigations of hydrodynamic focusing of colloidal dispersions

    Author : V. Krishne Gowda; Fredrik Lundell; Daniel Söderberg; Lynn Walker; KTH; []

    Abstract : Dispersed non-spherical particles are the fundamental constituent of many complex fluids. Such fluids are studied both for their industrial and scientific importance, and for their peculiar functional properties (mechanical, optical, thermal, fluidic). READ MORE

  5. 10. Creating and Probing Extreme States of Materials : From Gases and Clusters to Biosamples and Solids

    Author : Bianca Iwan; Nicusor Timneanu; Janos Hajdu; Stacey Sorensen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; free-electron laser; ultrashort X-rays; non-equilibrium plasma; Coulomb explosion; isotope effect; hydrodynamic expansion; ion acceleration; high intensity lasers; ablation; time-of-flight spectroscopy; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Free-electron lasers provide high intensity pulses with femtosecond duration and are ideal tools in the investigation of ultrafast processes in materials. Illumination of any material with such pulses creates extreme conditions that drive the sample far from equilibrium and rapidly convert it into high temperature plasma. READ MORE
