11. On the Impact of Piston Motion and In-Cylinder Charge Composition on Energy Release, Auto Ignition and Emission Formation in Premixed Charge Internal Combustion Engines
Abstract : The results presented in this thesis can be divided into four areas of investigation: Investigation of the effect of new volume-crank angle relations on engine emissions, power and efficiency; investigation of nitrogen oxides effect on auto ignition and knock in SI engines; investigation of premixed SI and HCCI engine operation with the alternative fuels hydrogen and reformed methanol gas (RMG); software development of a detailed chemical kinetics zonal engine model. Model development of the in-house two-zone chemical kinetic code focused on expansion of the Jacobian matrix to allow simulations of variable in-cylinder charge. READ MORE

12. Laser Spectroscopic Techniques for Combustion Diagnostics Directed Towards Industrial Applications
Abstract : In the work presented in the thesis, different laser spectroscopic techniques were utilized for measurement of species concentrations, as well as for surface thermometry. Experiments were conducted in various combustion environments, ranging from laboratory burners to truck-sized internal combustion (IC) engines, gas turbine combustors and a full-size aircraft turbofan engine. 13. Spray and Spray Combustion Characteristics of Diesel-Ethanol Fuel Blends
Abstract : In Diesel engines, the quality of fuel atomization and fuel-air mixing inside the cylinder have important effects on the combustion process, and therefore strongly related to the fuel efficiency and emission formation. To understand how the injected fuel mixes with air and combustion processes in a Diesel engine, fundamental spray experiments can be carried out in a constant chamber under different engine-like conditions. 14. Spark Ignition Combustion of Direct Injected Alternative Fuels
Abstract : Several technologies and modifications exist to increase the fuel efficiency of passenger vehicles in general and spark ignition engines in particular. Combining a spark ignition engine with an electric drive system in hybrid powertrain and thermodynamic cycle improvements are two such approaches with the potential to greatly reduce fuel consumption. 15. Laser-Based Investigations of Combustion Phenomena in Gas Turbine Related Burners
Abstract : Experiments were performed on various combustion devices to investigate the flames employing different optical measurement techniques under atmospheric pressure conditions. Non-intrusive laser-based techniques provided in-situ information concerning different parameters of the combustion process, with a high degree of temporal and spatial resolution. READ MORE
