  1. 1. Dynamics of the voltage-sensor domain in voltage-gated ion channels : Studies on helical content and hydrophobic barriers within voltage-sensor domains

    Author : Christine S. Schwaiger; Erik Lindahl; Lynn Kamerlin; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; activation; deactivation; inactivation; voltage-sensor; VSD; Kv1.2- 2.1; F233; hydrophobic barrier; alpha-helix; 3 10 -helix; Biological physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Abstract : Voltage-gated ion channels play fundamental roles in neural excitability and thus dysfunctional channels can cause disease. Understanding how the voltage-sensor of these channels activate and inactivate could potentially be useful in future drug design of compounds targeting neuronal excitability. READ MORE

  2. 2. Voltage sensor activation and modulation in ion channels

    Author : Christine S Schwaiger; Lindahl Erik; Paolo Carloni; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; activation; deactivation; inactivation; voltage sensor; VSD; gating; Kv1.2-2.1; Shaker; F233; hydrophobic barrier;

    Abstract : Voltage-gated ion channels play fundamental roles in neural excitability, they are for instance responsible for every single heart beat in our bodies, and dysfunctional channels cause disease that can be even lethal. Understanding how the voltage sensor of these channels function is critical for drug design of compounds targeting neuronal excitability. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ion Tracks for Micro- and Nanofabrication : From Single Channels to Superhydrophobic Surfaces

    Author : Reimar Spohr; Lars Westerberg; Lars Montelius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ion track; single ion; real time; phase detection; conductometric cell; conductometry; electro replication; microtechnology; nanotechnology; surfactant; self organization; GMR; magnetic; sensor technology; hydrophobic; tilted texture.; Physics; Fysik; Materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Abstract : A method is described for preset-count irradiations between 1 and 100 ions singling-out individual ions from an ion beam with more than a billion ions arriving per second. The ion tracks are etched in a conductometric system with real-time evaluation of the acquired data. The etch process can be interrupted when reaching a preset channel diameter. READ MORE

  4. 4. Enhancement and Characterization of Films for Barrier and Release Applications

    Author : Maria Petersson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; release; edible materials; petroleum wax; starch; acetoglyceride; microstructure; water vapour permeability; phase separation; protein;

    Abstract : Films and coatings can improve the quality and shelf-life of food products by acting as barriers to e.g. water vapour and oxygen. Many edible biopolymer films, based on polysaccharides and proteins, form excellent oxygen barriers but most often provide only poor water vapour barriers. READ MORE

  5. 5. Properties of modified starches and their use in the surface treatment of paper

    Author : Anna Jonhed; Lars Järnström; Ann-Charlotte Eliasson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Surface treatment of paper; hydrophobically modified starches; temperature-responsive starch; inclusion complexes; barrier properties; Surface engineering; Ytbehandlingsteknik; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The papermaking industry uses a large amount of starch each year, both as a wet-end additive and as a rheological modifier in surface sizing and coating colors. It is important to be able to reduce the amount of chemicals used in the papermaking and surface treatment process, to reduce costs and to make the process even more efficient. READ MORE
