  1. 1. Treatment of domestic wastewater using microbiological processes and hydroponics in Sweden

    Author : Anna Norström; Gunnel Dalhammar; Jörgen Hanaeus; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microbiology; biological; hydroponics; microbial composition; nitrogen; organic matter; phosphorus; small scale; theoretical energy requirements; wastewater treatment.; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Conventional end-of-pipe solutions for wastewater treatment have been criticized from a sustainable view-point, in particular regarding recycling of nutrients. The integration of hydroponic cultivation into a wastewater treatment system has been proposed as an ecological alternative, where nutrients can be removed from the wastewater through plant uptake; however, cultivation of plants in a temperate climate, such as Sweden, implies that additional energy is needed during the colder and darker period. 2. 2. Arsenic accumulation in plants for food and phytoremediation : Influence by external factors

    Author : Claes Bergqvist; Maria Greger; Sylvia Lindberg; Lena Ma; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arsenic; accumulation; availability; distribution; habitat; phy-toremediation; rhizosphere; redox potential; speciation; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Arsenic (As) appears in the environment as various As species, which may vary in plant uptake and toxicity. Moreover, As exposure may vary between habitat due to availability and speciation, both of which are influenced by redox potential. To decrease As uptake, addition of silicate may be a tool. 3. 3. Nutrient Transfer in Aquaponic Systems – Optimizing microbial processes for greater circularity and economic viability

    Author : Victor P. Lobanov; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Aquaculture; Aquaponics; Controlled environment agriculture; Waste revalorization; Microbiology;

    Abstract : The trend towards sustainable process design in modern industries combines the goal of improving process efficiency with a conscientious shift towards resource conservation. Aquaponics, a system that involves co-cultivating fish and plants, is a waste-conscious food production system. READ MORE

  4. 4. Comparative analysis of pathogen occurrence in wastewater : management strategies for barrier function and microbial control

    Author : Jakob Ottoson; Bengt Hultman; Roland Schertenleib; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bacteria; parasites; treatment; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : This project was initiated to fill knowledge gaps on the occurrence of pathogens in different streams of wastewater, e.g. greywater and domestic wastewater. READ MORE

  5. 5. Phytoremediation of mercury by terrestrial plants

    Author : Yaodong Wang; Maria Greger; Lena Kautsky; Douglas Godbold; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoremediation; phytoextraction; phytostabilization; bioavailability; willow; Hg; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Mercury (Hg) pollution is a global environmental problem. Numerous Hg-contaminated sites exist in the world and new techniques for remediation are urgently needed. READ MORE
