Abstract : Brain cholesterol is characterized by a very low turnover with very little exchange with lipoproteins in the circulation. We have investigated whether side chain-hydroxylated cholesterol species are important for elimination of cholesterol from the brain. 9. Cytochrome P450 Enzymes in the Metabolism of Vitamin D3
Abstract : A cytochrome P450 enzyme in pig kidney that catalyzes the hydroxylations of vitamin D3 and C27-sterols was cloned. DNA sequence analysis of the cDNA revealed that the enzyme belongs to the CYP27 family. The recombinant kidney CYP27A enzyme catalyzed the 25-hydroxylation of vitamin D3 and the 27-oxygenation of C27-sterols. READ MORE

Abstract : Enzymes catalyzing side chain hydroxylations and dehydrogenation/isomerization in different pathways of bile acid biosynthesis were studied.Pig liver mitochondrial sterol 27-hydroxylase (CYP27A) was found to catalyze 24- and 25-hydroxylation of cholesterol in addition to the known 27-hydroxylation.
