  1. 1. Deviant sexual behavior, hormones and sex-chromosomal relationship : A study in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR)

    Author : Anders Wall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacology; SHR; WKY; Rat; Copulatory performance; Deviant sexual behavior; Neuroendocrine mechanisms; Neonatal; Farmakologi; Pharmacological research; Farmakologisk forskning; Neurology; neurologi;

    Abstract : The general aim of the present thesis was to gain insight into some biological factors that influencedeviant sexual performance. Two inbred strains selectively bred (hypertension) from the same Wistarrat colony were used: the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and its normotensive progenitor theWistar Kyoto rat (WKY). 2. 2. Opioids regulate proliferation of neural progenitors. A study on the effects of opioids on adult rat hippocampal progenitors in vitro and in vivo

    Author : Anders I. Persson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Opioid; brain; hippocampus; rat; neurogenesis; progenitor; stem cell; b-endorphin; calcium; MAPK;

    Abstract : The opioid receptors were among the first pharmacologically described brain receptors. These opioid receptors have thereafter been shown to mediate effects on proliferation and differentiation in both the embryonal and adult central nervous system. READ MORE

  3. 3. Mechanisms of opiate tolerance and dependence in the rat

    Author : Orsolya Hoffman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Drug addiction is a complex phenomenon with various biological, psychological and social causes and consequences, which belongs to the major problems of today's society. Opiates have been used and misused for thousand of years and addiction to them develops both in humans and in animals. READ MORE

  4. 4. The developing rat kidney : the dopamine system and related serine/threonine kinases and phosphatases

    Author : Johan Svennilson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : apoptosis; confocal immunofluorescence; DARPP-32; dopamine; foetal renal development; hypertension; in situ hybridization; metanephric culture; mouse; nephron number; PKC; PP1 PP2A; protein phosphorylation; rat;

    Abstract : The kidney originates from the fusion and conversion of two tissues: the metanephric mesenchyme and the ureter epithelium, an evagination from the Wolffian duct. Although a number of candidate molecules have been shown to be of importance for the differentiation of the embryonic kidney, many of the signalling pathway leading to this development are still obscure. 5. 5. Studies on host-related pathogenesis of herpes simplex type-1 encephalitis in rat

    Author : Biborka Bereczky-Veress; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In order to explore the molecular mechanisms of Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE), a severe infection of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by Herpes simplex type 1 virus (HSV-1); a rat model resembling the human condition was characterized in the DA (Dark Agouti) strain. After injection into the whiskers’ area HSV-1 entered the CNS at the level of the brain stem via the trigeminal ganglion, subsequently spreading to the thalamus, cortex and olfactory bulb, leading to death at five days post infection (dpi).
