  1. 16. In vitro contracture testing for the diagnosis of malignant hyperthermia susceptibility

    Author : Gunilla Islander; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; intensive care; Anestesiologi; Anaesthesiology; specificity; IVCT; Malignant hyperthermia susceptibility; skeletal muscle; inheritance pattern; sensitivity; reproducibility; intensivvård;

    Abstract : Malignant hyperthermia (MH) susceptibility is a rare inherited muscular disorder, which may cause a lethal increase in metabolism during anaesthesia with certain commonly used anaesthetic. Susceptible individuals are without any signs or symptoms. It is important to identify individuals at risk, since the MH reaction is preventable. READ MORE

  2. 17. Studies in Physiological Optics and Microwave Hyperthermia

    Author : Claes M. E. Beckman; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; optics; cancer treatment; light scattering;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the optics of the eye, the sky and microwave induced hyperthermia treatment of cancer. Light scattering in normal eyes is reviewed and its influence on vision is discussed in some detail. READ MORE

  3. 18. Anaesthesia and Genetics of the Ryanodine 1 Receptor

    Author : Marcus Ewert Broman; Lund Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; General Anaesthesia; Ryanodine 1 Receptor; Malignant Hyperthermia; Genetics;

    Abstract : The only validated method to characterize the phenotype and to reach a definitive diagnosis of Malignant Hyperthermia Susceptibility (MHS; OMIM *145600), a pharmacogenetic disease linked to the Ryanodine 1 receptor gene (RYR1; OMIM *180901), is an invasive muscle contraction test requiring a muscle biopsy, according to the European (IVCT) protocol or to the North American (CHCT) protocol. The series of scientific papers in this thesis tries to reach as far as possible in diagnosing MHS from peripheral venous blood samples collected at the patients’ local primary care provider and sent to the laboratory over significant transportation time and distance. 5. 20. Characterization of supported lipid membranes towards the development of nano-sized drug carriers for hyperthermia applications

    Author : Yujia Jing; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; size dependence; Supported lipid membrane; lipid phase transition; flip-flop; asymmetry;

    Abstract : So called thermosensitive liposomal drug carriers for temperature-controlled drug release under hyperthermal conditions have recently attracted great attention and advanced lipid membrane - nanoparticle assemblies are emerging at an increasing rate to meet the demands for multifunctional drug carriers in medicine. The rational design of these drug delivery systems will require understanding of lipid membrane physicochemical properties under conditions relevant to the medical treatment. READ MORE
