  1. 16. Lung Emphysema & Cardiac Function

    Author : Kirsten Jörgensen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : emphysema; hemodynamics; ventricular end-diastolic volumes; lung volume reduction; ventricular function; transoesophageal echocardiography; magnetic resonance imaging; diastole; simendan; hypertrophy;

    Abstract : Patients with severe lung emphysema have poor quality of life because of impaired lung function and reduced exercise tolerance. Concomitant heart disease in severe emphysema is well recognised. The prevailing view is that mainly the right side of the heart is involved, while the issue of left ventricular (LV) involvement is less studied. READ MORE

  2. 17. Variability and adaptation in the contractile system of smooth muscle

    Author : Mia Löfgren; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; essential light chain; desmin; shortening velocity; integrin; intermediate filament; hypertrophy; non-muscle myosin; smooth muscle; myosin; heavy chain; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the large diversity of the contractile properties in smooth muscle. Six studies, I-VI, are included. I: a slow smooth muscle (aorta) has a different nucleotide and phosphate dependence compared to a fast type (taenia coli). READ MORE

  3. 18. Studies on malignant ventricular tachyarrhythmias and their treatment with an implantable defibrillator

    Author : Bengt Sandstedt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Implantable cardioverter defibrillator; ventricular fibrillation; ventricular tachycardia; predischarge test; defibrillation threshold; discrimination; electrogram morphology; aortic stenosis; hypertrophy; noradrenalin;

    Abstract : Aims: To investigate the hemodynamic, metabolic and autonomic effects of ventricular fibrillation per se during maintained circulation. To study the defibrillation threshold (DFT) and efficacy of a new and thinner ICD lead (DSP) compared with the standard lead (C). READ MORE

  4. 19. Left ventricular hypertrophy and the insulin resistance syndrome

    Author : Johan Sundström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Left ventricular hypertrophy; insulin; glucose; lipids; mortality; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Geriatrics; geriatrik;

    Abstract : Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the insulin resistance syndrome are common conditions associated with a markedly increased cardiovascular risk. In a fairly large prospective longitudinal study of men from the general population, we found that an unfavorable serum fatty acid profile and components of the insulin resistance syndrome such as dyslipidemia, obesity and hypertension at age 50 predicted the prevalence of LVH at age 70. 5. 20. Ribosome biogenesis during skeletal muscle hypertrophy

    Author : Ferdinand von Walden; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Muscle adaptation to chronic resistance exercise (RE) is the result of a cumulative effect on gene expression and protein content. Following a bout of RE, muscle protein synthesis increases and, if followed by consecutive bouts (training), protein accretion and muscle hypertrophy develops. READ MORE
