  1. 1. What is a life worth? : methodological issues in estimating the value of a statistical life

    Author : Mikael Svensson; Lars Hultkrantz; Magnus Johannesson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Value of a statistical life; scale bias; cognitive ability; hypothetical bias; cost-benefit analysis; calibration; certainty approach; attitude theory; seat belt use; bicycle helmet use; altruism; mortality rates; acute myocardial infarction; unemployment.; Economics; Nationalekonomi; Economics; Nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses methodological issues in estimating the value of a statistical life (VSL). Two main approaches have been used to estimate the VSL, the indirect and direct methods; the indirect method is based on revealed preferences, such as the wage premium demanded for a risky job. 2. 2. The Demand for Health and the Contingent Valuation Method

    Author : Bengt Liljas; Lunds universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; econometrics; Economics; Willingness to Pay; Contingent Valuation; Cost-Benefit Analysis; Economic Evaluation; Risk perception; Insurance; Grossman model; Uncertainty; Demand for Health; Health Economics; economic theory; economic systems; economic policy; Nationalekonomi; ekonometri; ekonomisk teori; ekonomiska system; ekonomisk politik;

    Abstract : The theoretical part develops Michael Grossman’s dynamic demand-for-health model by (a) letting the depreciation rate depend upon the level of health, (b) allowing a continuous set of health states, (c) introducing uncertainty (by letting health be a stochastic variable), (d) introducing social and private insurance and (e) releasing the assumption of an isoperimetric budget constraint. Beside the theoretical results, there are also results with important policy implications. READ MORE

  3. 3. Valuation and pricing of traffic safety

    Author : Gunnar Lindberg; Lars Hultkrantz; Olof Johansson-Stenman; Örebro universitet; []

    Abstract : This thesis consists of six essays covering the topic of valuation and pricing of accidents. In the first essay a theory of the external marginal cost of accidents is presented. The external cost is dependent on the value of statistical life, the proportion internal cost and the so called risk elasticity, i.e. READ MORE

  4. 4. Economic evaluation, value of life, stated preference methodology and determinants of risks

    Author : Björn Sund; Lars Hultkrantz; Ulf Persson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Cost-benefit analysis; value of a statistical life; contingent valuation; cardiac arrest; defibrillation; calibration; sensitivity to scope; risk communication; response times; incident experience; risk perception.; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; Economics; Nationalekonomi; Economics; Nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : The first paper examines the value of a statistical life (VSL) for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) victims. We found VSL values to be higher for OHCA victims than for people who die in road traffic accidents and a lower-bound estimate of VSL for OHCA would be in the range of 20 to 30 million Swedish crowns (SEK). 5. 5. Valuing Reductions in the Risk of Traffic Accidents Based on Empirical Studies in Sweden

    Abstract : At the beginning of the 1990s the Swedish National Road Administration (SNRA) adopted the willingness to pay (WTP) approach for estimating the benefits of safety improvements. However, since then there have been discussions about how to find the most valid and reliable empirical methods to conduct WTP studies. READ MORE
