  1. 21. Surviving Birth and Thriving : Identifying infants at risk of death and disability in low- and middle-income countries

    Author : Antti Kukka; Ashish KC; Helena Litorp; Nick Brown; Thorkild Tylleskär; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pediatrics; neonatology; physiology; neonatal encephalopathy; hypoxia-ischemia; heart rate; neonatal resuscitation; neonatal follow-up; disabiltiy; cerebral palsy; general movements assessment; global health; low- and middle-income countries; pilot projects; telemedicine; qualitative research; Pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Abstract : Background: Ending preventable newborn deaths is an unfinished global health agenda. Infants surviving birth have a right to thrive and to reach their full developmental potential. READ MORE

  2. 22. Hypoxic-ischemic injury in the immature brain. Role of mitochondria, caspases and NMDA receptors

  3. 23. Adenosine receptors in the immature brain : with special reference to their role in hypoxic ischemia

    Author : Ulrika Ådén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Newborn; neonatal; caffeine; theophylline; hypoxia-ischemia; adenosine; immature;

    Abstract : Although the newborn brain tolerates a much longer period of oxygen deprivation and ischemia than does the adult brain, perinatal hypoxic ischemia probably is an important cause of neurological dysfunction, cerebral palsy and epilepsy later in life. Hence it is important to investigate the mechanisms that modulate the extent of perinatal ischemic brain damage. READ MORE

  4. 24. On evaluation of organ damage in perinatal asphyxia : an experimental and clinical study

    Author : Mathias Karlsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Perinatal asphyxia; hypoxia-ischemia; hypothermia; pig; lactate dehydrogenase; aminotransferases;

    Abstract : Leakage of intracellular enzymes such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) signalling multi organ dysfunction (MOD) is seen together with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) after perinatal asphyxia. Hypothermia (HT) can attenuate HIE following perinatal asphyxia and hypoxia-ischemia (HI) but the neuroprotective efficacy falls dramatically the longer the delay in initiating HT. READ MORE

  5. 25. Physiology and pathophysiology of central adenosine A1 and A2A receptors

    Author : Linda Halldner Henriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Adenosine; A1 receptor; A2A receptor; knock-out mouse; in situ hybridization; receptor autoradiography; sleep; hypoxia-ischemia; behavior; motor activity; caffeine; tolerance;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to further investigate the individual roles of central adenosine A1 and A2A receptors in the physiological and pathophysiological effects of adenosine. In addition, the characteristics of different adenosine receptor ligands were studied. READ MORE
