  1. 21. Radical aspects on arthritis : the role of neutrophil generation of nitric oxide and superoxide in inflammatory conditions

    Author : Jan Cedergren; Thomas Skogh; Tommy Sundqvist; Tony Forslund; Ingrid Lundberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neutrophils; reactive oxygen species; arthritis; NOS; NO; arginase; integrins; Internal medicine; Invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : The polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocytes (neutrophils) are gaining renewed interest regarding their involvement in chronic inflammatory disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Besides phagocytic and destructive capabilities, neutrophils have regulatory roles, e.g. by influencing responses from dendritic cells and lymphocytes. READ MORE

  2. 22. Reactive oxygen and nitrogen in host defence against Francisella tularensis

    Author : Helena Lindgren; Anders Sjöstedt; Tommy Sundquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell and molecular biology; Francisella tularensis; inducible nitric oxide synthase; phagocyte oxidase; macrophages; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; klinisk bakteriologi; Clinical Bacteriology;

    Abstract : Francisella tularensis, the causative agent of tularemia, is a potent human and animal pathogen. Initially upon infection of the host, intramacrophage proliferation of F. tularensis occurs but after activation of the acquired host immunity, the phagocytes become activated to kill the bacterium. In my thesis, I focused on mechanisms utilized by F. READ MORE

  3. 23. Vascular actions of antimicrobial peptides

    Author : Cristina Ciornei; Sektion II; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Cardiovascular system; vascular smooth muscle; sepsis; nitric oxide; human antimicrobial peptide LL-37; Antimicrobial peptides; lipopolysaccharide; bactericidal permeability-increasing protein;

    Abstract : The present thesis focuses on the vascular effects of antimicrobial peptides especially mechanisms involving the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), which is released from the blood vessel wall during inflammatory conditions such as sepsis. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide stimulates the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which increases the NO production in vascular tissues or cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). 4. 24. Inducible nitric oxide synthase : in vascular smooth muscle cells

    Author : Zhong-qun Yan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : nitric oxide; nitric oxide synthase; vascular smooth muscle cells; transcriptional regulation; NF-[kappa]B; I[kappa]B; pathophysiological role;

    Abstract : Besides the constitutively expressed nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC) have the potential to express the inducible isoform of NOS (iNOS). Given the important effects of nitric oxide and the high output of this enzyme, expression of iNOS in SMC and its pathophysiological significance were investigated in the present study. READ MORE

  5. 25. Nitric oxide in inflammatory bowel disease

    Author : Tryggve Ljung; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to study nitric oxide (NO) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with a special reference to disease activity and disease location, in bolls an adult and a pediatric patient population, using rectal gas sampling. Furthermore, we investigated the cellular source of the measured NO as well as the relationship between the expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and the proinflammatory TNF-alpha, IL-10 and INF-gamma.
