  1. 1. Brash Ice and Level Ice Growth, Effects of Snow

    Author : Vasiola Zhaka; Andrzej Cwirzen; Kaj Riska; Robert Ettema; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; brash ice growth; level ice growth; snow effects; slush; snow ice; macroporosity; piece size distribution; Byggmaterial; Building Materials;

    Abstract : Brash ice occurs due to frequent navigation in ice-infested waters, typically along established navigation tracks regularly maintained by icebreakers and harbors. The accumulation and consolidation of brash ice between two ship passages are influenced by meteorological factors including the cumulative freezing air temperatures, and the mechanical processes such as ice-breaking due to ship passages. 2. 2. Breaking the ice : effects of ice formation and winter floods on vegetation along streams

    Author : Lovisa Lind; Christer Nilsson; Christine Weber; Michael Scott; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; anchor ice; climate change; in-stream; riparian; river ice; streams; vegetation;

    Abstract : Streams in cold regions are characterized by unique hydrological processes that control flow regime and water levels. One of the most important processes is the formation, growth and melting of different types of ice in and around the stream channel during winter. READ MORE

  3. 3. Mechanisms for the Influence from Ice Nucleus Aerosols on Clouds and their Indirect Effects: Cloud Modelling

    Author : Deepak Waman; MERGE: ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; clouds; Radiation; Ice Nuclei; Primary Biological Aerosol Particles; Ice particles; Secondary ice; primary ice; Aerosol particles; thunderstorm;

    Abstract : The role of multiple groups of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) as ice nucleating particles (INPs), and of ice formation processes such as time-dependent freezing of various INPs, and various secondary ice production(SIP) mechanisms in overall ice concentration has been evaluated in a range of cloud systems by simulating them numerically with the state-of-the-art ‘Aerosol-Cloud’ (AC) model in a 3D mesoscale domain. Also, the mechanismsof aerosol indirect effects (AIEs) arising from anthropogenic INPs, and the responses to these AIEs from time-dependent INP freezing and SIP processes are investigated in the simulated clouds. 4. 4. Tensile fracture of ice : test methods and fracture mechanics analysis

    Author : Lars Stehn; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Structural Engineering; Konstruktionsteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with several aspects of fracture of both brackish (low salinity) sea ice and freshwater ice. The tests and analyses are confined to tensile, or in fracture mechanics language, Mode I, fracture. READ MORE

  5. 5. Water Condensation and Freezing in the Atmosphere: Exploring Deliquescence and Ice Nucleation

    Author : Dimitri Castarède; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hygroscopicity; Deliquescence; Atmosphere; Particles; Ice Nucleation; Ice Nucleation Chamber;

    Abstract : Atmospheric aerosols play key roles in numerous atmospheric processes. They affect human health, are substrates and components for atmospheric chemistry, and via their contribution to clouds affect the water cycle and the energy balance of the planet. READ MORE
